I will be inheriting a 1972 win 94 in 30.30. The great news is that its only had 12 rounds through it and is basically new. Hoping people out there with experience with this rifle can give me positive and negative feedback.

I had one years ago that was a sweet shooting rifle. Mine had just a hard plastic butt plate so it kicked like a mule but it was a great brush gun for the local Blacktail and bear.

I shot my first deer in 1995 with a Model 94 30-30, one shot at 30 yards.

That is about the extent of my experience with this rifle/cartridge. Just sold the rifle to Chola, hopefully he can find some more use out of it. :)

Great close to moderate range deer rifle, a classic no doubts.

Mine is a few months older, being a late 1971, and has a steel buttplate. It shoots just fine, has shot many many whitetails, and last year a moose. Mostly with 170 grain Hornady Interlocks.
The date is important, if it were an early 1971 or earlier back to 1964 it might have a bunch of stamped steel parts, and might not be very reliable.
It will be top eject, so you can't have a scope unless it's scout mounted, or side mounted. I recommend, and use, a receiver sight.

You have obviously never been kicked by a mule :p

:D :D Haha!
I took my first deer with one at 75 yards. I can't say it kicks very hard though. I put a peep sight on and am in the process of re-learning it. Should be real good with the new Leverevolution ammo from Hornady.

I don't think you're likley to find many bad reviews of this rifle/calibre.

Keep the shots under 200yds and youi should be dancing, also, invest in a tang peep site, better than any sort of sight you could put on this rifle.

I've got 2 post 64 Win 94's one with a metal palte one with plastic. I shoot both and they are great little bush/truck guns. Light and handy, jsut remember its not a long range gun,

30-30 with good peep sight is absolutely killer for close up brush hunting and goes along with my 30-06 so I can hunt long or short no matter what the bush is like-great gun-ruled the west for a long time

The '94 .30-30 didn't urvive over a century because it was poorly designed or inadequate as a deer rifle ! Killed my first deer in '68 with a Mod. 92 rifle in .44-40 that had been killing deer for 60+ seasons before that, and the second, third and fourth deer with a just as old .30-30 octagon barelled '94.
In my experiance, Winchesters 170gr. Power Points work just fine out to 125 yards.

i have two one with a scope to hunt with full power loads, one old rifle take down model that i shoot just cast bullets from, either one is excellent, full power kills your deer dead , doesnt blow it all to pieces, good to 200 yds,

As has been hinted at by some posters, I don't think your "new" M-94 will shoot to it's potential with the issue sights. The semi buckhorn rear sight covers up too much of the target, and a bead front sight is not sharp against the target. If it were mine, I would find a ghost ring rear sight and change the front bead to a higher (the issue front sight will have you shooting high with a ghost ring) rectangular post. I recently had Dave Jennings make such a front sight for me, the blade of which he fashioned from brass. Against a white back ground the sight appears black, against a black background the sight appears white.

Used my 30-30 carbine this past fall to take the largest whitetail I have ever harvested. One shot kill at a distance I will not state! You guys will not believe it anyway. This summer I fully intend to use a 30-30 Canadian Centennial Rifle for a rifle competition on the southern prairies.
By far my favorite cartridge/rifle/carbine for offhand shooting....
PS, WITH peep sights and a much smaller front bead.....

It's still debatable if the Winchester 30-30 or the Colt 45 was "The gun that won the West", but after 112 years the old lever action is still going strong. I agree with the other posts - forget a scope a put on a good tang site. And enjoy. :D
