I just bought a 1964 Win '94 that has a feeding issue, plus, the action gets very tight when the bolt is 1"open. The action is smooth to that point however....... When picking up a round from the mag, again the action is smooth untill the bolt is about 1" open and then it feels jammed and doesn't budge. To get the round to feed, I have to close the action again, and slam open the lever with force and then the round gets completely picked up. Closing the action is smooth, with or without a round. It's almost like the bolt has a tough time getting over the hammer, and once it's over the bolt "bump" slides over the hammer it gets smooth again.

Lots or rounds through it I'd guess, and the bluing is mostly gone. Wood is good. I shot a 3 shot 1 1/2 group @ 100 yards with open sights and it surprised the hell out of me....prolly could never repeat this!......... So, I'd be nice to get the action smoothed out.

I've found a web site on dissassembly of Win 94's, but wouldn't know what to look for once it was adrift.

Any experienced 94 tinkerers out there?

It sounds like you have a very good mainspring. The bolt has a hard time pushing back on the hammer. When you #### the hammer manually, is there quite a bit of forward force when you release the hammer?

No, there does not seem to be an unreasonable amount of force required to pull the hammer back with my thumb. It goes back quite easily. But, when the bolt begins touching the hammer as it's going over the bolt, it has to push the hammer down a fraction on an inch further to get over it. This is where the resistance *seems* to be. Once the bolt "hump" is over the hammer, the action is smooth again.

Now, having said that, I can't really see what's happening to the action inside as this tight spot is felt..........


Further, there is a noteable difference opening the action with and without a round insitu. With the mag empty, there is 50% less effort required to get over this tight spot, as compared to when there is a round in the mag and it's getting picked up. Then, I really have to slam the lever down to open the action fully. Steady controlled increasing downward pressure on the lever doesn't cut it, only the slam method get's it open.
 
I would suggest you post your question at leverguns.com. A great deal of knowledge and experience. Super people also, you should have your serial number for them they are sure to ask.
 
I have a Model '94 AE and I love it! Pick up a book for firearms assembly/disassembly and follow the instructions. I have found that when stripping apert unfamiliar firearms, it's well worth your whileto have a large plastic bag for stripping as it will catch those small springs that always take flight and a digital camera( take pics before and after in sequence). Lay parts from left to right; in a clean, dry place; Never use force; use correct tools correctly. Do you reload for your 30-30? Try a 150gn bullet, 36 gns of win 748 and a fed mag primer! it's a magic load for mine!
 
Don't force it , 94s get smoother as they get older, you have something not right in your gun. If you manually #### the hammer then work the lever do you still have the problem? I worked on a 94 that had a similar problem, what had happened was the loading gate screw on the right side of the receiver had come loose and someone had tightened it but the loading gate was not in the right place when tightened so now there was not enough room for things to move smoothly. I took the action apart relocated the gate to where it was supposed to be reassembled and every thing was okay. I had a hard opening problem with a post 64, similar symptom in that it was very hard right at the cocking hump--the cause was a broken lever safety spring that was jamming the trigger some.
