My hunting buddy gave me his 30-30 with shells jambed between the tube and shell lifter. The lever was in the down position with 2 shells under it. When I took it apart the lifter is made out of tin. Can I replace the tin lifter with the solid cast style with no machining or fitting? Will this stop the shells from popping out of the tube when levering? Bob

Goto http://stevespages.com/ipb-winchester-94.html in the schematic part 30 the carrier is what you want to replace and part 33 has a raised portion on the tip that part 30 fits over. I believe the piece on tip of 33 stops the cartridges from coming from the mag when the carrier is lifted. Check its condition , that MAY be what let the other cartridges to come under the carrier. I also believe you can replace the tin carrier with a latter case carrier but not from a pre-64 1894, I believe you need one of the newer cast carriers. This is what I was told when I inquired about doing the same thing. If I am wrong, I sure someone who has done it will correct me.

Bearman.
Had a look at the schematics and then at the used parts of the rifle that is tore apart. I think your right about part#33 called the link. It looks wore at the front part that holds the shells in the tube. I will order both parts and give it a try. Thanks for the link. Bob

The link is the part that stops the shells from popping out. This part failing is quite common on the Post 64's. Replacement with a new part is the best option, but failing that, peening may help provided it is not too brittle.
