My dad has a Winchester Cooey 600 (bolt action .22) and the thing is a nice rifle. However sometimes I get weak primer strikes, there will be a small dent in the cartridge but not nearly enough to set it off. I thought it might be gunk in the bolt so I let it soak in varsol overnight but no success.

I would like to use this thing for hunting as my 10/22T is kinda heavy but it isn't too reliable in the firing department.

Could the firing pin be compacted due to dry firing?

that's a definite thought. Also just because you soak it in Varsol overnight does not mean that it'll move the grunge out from the firing pin mechanism. I suggest a full strip down and clean. At the same time you can try the firing pin without the spring to check for any signs of binding. If it is binding a bit of stoning on a fine india stone would soon fix the issue.

I would disassemble the bolt but they are not known for easily disassembly.

I will try soaking it again, last time I just ran like half a can of wd 40 through it and then worked it until it was almost dry. I will try the brake cleaner this time.

From looking at the firing pin it looks fine but I have nothing else to compare it too.
