What is the correct way to get the firing pin/shroud assembly out of a win M-70 (push feed) bolt when the safety will not turn into the middle position? My buddy has a problem with the safety not working and we need to get the assembly out so it can be dissasembled.

Thanks, 44Bore.

44Bore: I assume he's taken the bolt out of the action, but has he lost position of the cocking piece to the bolt body already? If he has tell him to clamp the cocking piece sear by the sides in a smooth jawed vise and pull on the bolt until he can rotate it up to position that holds the sear and cocking piece back and engage the safety midway.
If he hasn't lost the proper bolt position then the safety is out of time. Do the same procedure but as you pull on the bolt try to engage the safety at the middle position as you pull on it a bit at a time. Then depress the little side release on the shroud and unscrew the firing pin assembly. Getting it all set right may require the services of a gunsmith with tools and training. In fact it's likely to be a necessity unless you have good understanding of just how it works.

To be honest, if you can't figure out how to disassemble this, how do you figure you can diagnose and fix a safety problem. The fit of the trigger sears, the cocking piece and the safety lever are all critical and related. Quite easy to screw it up to the point where new parts will be required.
