I picked up a Winchester Model 70 in 6.5x55 sweed with a featherweight schnabel fore end stock. I would like to know more about the gun.
First I see that it has a Red/Brown rubber but pad and I see that this was an early 80's fitting. When did they stop putting these on M70's?
I also see 6.5x55 does not appear in current chamberings. When did they stop?
It has a hooded front sight which seems odd for a feather weight. Custom? After market addition?
I have not had any luck with the serial number as it is; G 325 ###. Which seems to be a USRA number.
Any help identifying what it is,should be, and when it was made would help.

Photos would help. An email to Winchester would probably clear things up faster than asking here. I'm not sure that anyone keeps too close of tabs on the vagaries and variations of the M70 Classics.

I am no Winchester expert, but they only made small runs of them, in the Classic trim. Is it a control round feed bolt? If so, then it's should be something like 1992. They also made a run of the push feed somewhere around 1997.

I had a M70 Featherweight in 7x57, pretty much like you describe, it had the Schnabel foreend and red recoil pad. I bought it in the 80's (I think) but don't remember exactly when.

I sold it like an idiot...

Could be one done up for the European market or just one someone added a sight to, more likely. The 6.5 X 55 was only offered for a few years in, I think, around 1996.
I did see M70 Featherweights and Rem 700 Mountain Rifles with open sights, in Euro chamberings (7X64) in Germany 20 years ago.

Congratulations on your Winchester Model 70 Fwt in 6.5x55mm find!

Personally, I consider them one of the Holy Grails of the factory sporters in the venerable 6.5x55mm ctg.

Here's pics of one I scored not too long ago. Serial Number is G 205###x:

NAA.

I have one exactly like NAA's. I bought it new from Le Baron in 1993. It was the 1st year that Le Baron had the 6.5 Model 70 in their catalog.

Like NAA's, mine doesn't have iron sights. If yours does then someone maybe had them installed? Does your actually have "Featherweight" on it?

My serial number is G202###x. 22 inch barrel, weight 6 1/2 lbs, rate of twist = 1 turn in 7.87".

Well I use a BB for internet surfing and photo bucket and my BB don't like each other so no photos....ever :(
CGN should really change how pics are posted IMHO.

Push feed, controlled round feed,.....I have no idea what the difference is.

As for asking winchester, No I haven't and from everyone else that is searching for info on their M70's I'm to understand that Winchester as the company is now could give a £#€& less what the company called Winchester did before they bought it. I've read that in some cases they won't even sell parts to people with older guns because of liability concerns. (They didn't make the gun so won't service it)

Mine looks like NAA's gun, but with a M70 saffari type front sight and no rear sight. (Removed for scope mount?)
And my stock is more matt finished than his is.
And my serial number is a 6 digit one.
