I’ll keep this short, a close friend of mine asked me if I could save a couple rifles he picked up awhile back. The previous owner stored them in soft bags in a seacan for years and two of the three were rusty as all hell, one just needed a bit of tlc and a good clean/oil but this M94 and a No.4 mk1 I have yet to work on we’re in sad shape.

Thankfully the bore and internals weren’t rusty, I stripped it down with multiple grits of wet/dry sandpaper to remove the rust and as much of the pitting as possible. Then I cold blued everything, it’s a 1975 manufactured gun and the receiver took the cold blue fairly well, I stripped the stock finish and it soaked up a ton of 50/50 blo and varsol mix. Followed up with a couple buffed out coats of furniture wax, the sight hood is on but I forgot to install it before I took pics. My buddy is extra happy not to have a rusty mess and know it’s safe to shoot.

Well done. FYI If you get some Brownells Oxpho blu and heat the metal with a hair dryer or heat gun you will get a deeper penatration and finish. The stuff is incredible.

What you say will work OK but better and more uniform results will be had when immersing the parts in boiling water and applying the Oxpho blue as fast as possible, then back into the water for another uniform heat up before the next coat.

A very light carding with 6"0" steel wool will add just a slight bit of polish.

Very nice for sure. Did you keep track of the hours you spent doing it?

Thanks, no I didn’t keep track. I started on it in jan of this year and just picked away at it when I had a moment. I don’t think it took all that long, sanding things down to bare metal was the most time consuming part.

I handed it back to him the other night and he’s real happy with how it turned out.

Yowza! Looks pretty good all things considered. Personally I would have tried putting it through the dishwasher first ;)

Very nice, I know a Gun Smith who uses a parkerize solution on
model 94 Winchester rifles that look like that
Some receivers won't take the blue , so he uses
a dark park colour
