Does one have to have a gunsmith set up the model 12 to handle a new(to it) barrel or does one need to take it to the local gunsmith to have set up?In other words it's not like swapping the barrel on a mossberg 500 or remington 870 right. Thanks for your time.

It takes quite a bit of expensive tooling to properly fit model 12 barrels. They do not exchange as more modern designs do.
Older actions usually require the locking recess to be welded up and remachined as well and usually require trigger group work too.

It can be quite expensive in the end. I do not know of anyone with the tooling to do this. I doubt your "local gunsmith" will be able t do it - hopefully I am wrong.

Thanks Guntech all I needed to know. By the way do these firearms have a firing pin issue?Should I keep one around?

Repairing the firing pin is better than replacing them .... usually it is the tip that breaks and the replacement does too... a good repair lasts...
