Purchased a 101 with fixed chokes full and modified. I measured the ID of the barrels at the muzzle.
The full measures .695. And the modified measures .712 diameter.
Question is , am I able to shoot steel shot with this gun?
I’m not sure anybody has worked on the gun.

What's the serial number to determine the year of production. You could pretty much shoot the dirtiest and hardest stuff through a later production chrome lined barrel. Are the barrels back bored, that will also give you a ball park as to when the gun was made. And there are other alternatives to steel and lead if you taking the gun out to hunt with.

That’s an oldie. You’ll need to open the full to a mod. When I spoke with Winchester about mine years ago they did not recommend any shot size larger than #2 to be run through any of the mod dimensions from LM through to IM. If you want to run BB you’ll have to bore it to IC.

So what muzzle diameter would that be for modified choke, with steel?

Actual muzzle diameter is not as important as the amount of constriction from the real bore diameter so once you know the true bore diameters a gunsmith can ream the chokes out to proper diameter. A Modified is typically in the range of .020" constriction with Light Mod about .015 and Imp Cyl about .010". Anything tighter than about .020" could result in barrel damage with large steel shot. You need a gunsmith's opinion: this is for info only. Also, even the early 101s had chrome-lined barrels and they are difficult to ream out, apparently.

Thanks, makes sense.
Will have to get a cylinder bore reading of the barrels to know the constrictions.

I have non-winchoked (screw-in) 12 gauge 101o/u made when winchester was starting to put screw in chokes on the 101. Winchester told me these guns were not made for steel shot and should not be used with steel shot unless they are win choked guns. Me being the expert have done it anyways. No barrel bulges or bursts but after badly scoring the bores I decided to save a valuable gun and use it for what it was intended. Even with the chrome lined bores the barrel wall thickness is not made to withstand the pressures of steel shot and the crazy 1400FPS+ loads people use these days. They are nicer to shoot than the newer steel shot proofed guns exactly because the barrels are not built out of drill stem pipe.
