Just wondering what one of these are worth?....its a Winchester 1200 "riot" 18 inch barrel....condition is definitely a good 9/10 orginal owner claims a box of 25 birdshot....any info would be great!

The only difference between this one and the model I just purchased for my kid is the barrel, he has 28" vr. It is in similar condition and I paid 280 with a hard case shipped to my door, hope this helps. I'm not certain how rare that barrel is, I've never seen one

Yes I've seen a ton of those with the 28 inch barrel......very common but never seen one with an 18 inch barrel stamped " riot"

The 1200 was made in the RIOT version for police and guard units. It differs from the field 1200 in that it has an unchecked stock and was always in 2 3/4" while some field versions were 3" magnums. The short barrel choked CYL was also a difference. Factory Riots did not have sling swivels. Despite the 1200's undeserved reputation as being somewhat less reliable than other riot guns it did serve many police departments well. Yours with the slide checkering pattern is a relatively late version. Nice gun never seen one in Canada before. Early guns sported white line spacers and checkered butt stocks. They were essentially field guns with the short Riot marked barrel.

^^^^^^great info thanks madtrapper143.....this one does have the sling swivel on the mag tube.....but no swivel on the buttock......from what you are saying do you think that someone just plunked the riot barrel on this 1200....and the rest of the shotgun is just a basic 1200 and not is not a factory winchester riot shotgun?

The unchecked butt stock and bolt lacking the "machine swirling" (for lack of a better term) would indicate yours is a factory Riot model. Of course these two items could have been swapped out over the years but that is unlikely. I am 99% confident yours is a factory Riot model. The front swivel was added or swapped the mag cap at some time. It should not have a magazine plug either.

Darryl

^^^^^thanks for all the great info......there is no machine swirling on the bolt....as most 1200s do.....there was no mag tube plug......is there any value to this gun as you said you have never seen one in Canada?.....or would this gun still just reflect a normal Winchester 1200 $ value ?

I like models 1200 and that gun is uber cool but it's value is the same as an entry end short barrelled shotgun like a Maverick 88. 1200's are not pursued by Winchester collectors so it's value would be around 250.00 to 300.00 dollars. IF it was the military issue 1200 that would be a different story. Martial shotguns have a very large collectors following. Enjoy the gun it will be a lot of fun.

Thanks for all the great info! Its much appreciated...I did figure it would fall along those lines for price point.....the 1200s and 1300s are built like a tank and butter smooth....I'd take one over a new one or an 870 anyday....I took a pic of it side by side with my police 1200 just for you! It's got a factory rear flip up sight as I'm sure you already know.... I know you will enjoy! I dont see these too often either.....I'm a big time 1300 defender collector as well they are priced right and you get a sweet a$$ shotgun for the money! Thanks again

I paid $225.00 for my Winchester back in the day(1984) for a three inch plain barrel and fixed full choke.
I sold it for $80.00 into its first duck hunting season when one of the action bars broke its spot weld at the guide for running down the magazine tube.
What’s it worth?
Depends on who is sellin and who the buyer is.
The markings might make it desireable to some, me not so much.
I would and did take a Remington 870 Sportsman over another Winchester and would do so again Ina heart beat..even an SPS because I know what the weakness of the SPS is and will be.

I am unclear on what a "SPS" model Remington is. Do you mean Express version or SP version or the Sportsman version? Also I would be interested in what you feel are the "weaknesses" of the Remington are because I have always had good service from my Remington shotguns. A second point of view is always appreciated by me.

regards, Darryl

Darryl, my bad.
I was having a ffs it was a cold wet day today at the office.
You are correct, I was in fact thinking of the express models on Remington 870’s.
