Was given a Winchester 1300 defender which seems to have issues locking up. Can push the pump forward and toggle the safety and it will lock but doesn’t do so properly on its own. Any idea’s on what could be the issue? Have googled it a lot and found nothing related online.

Make sure the nut(Slide Arm Cap) that holds the forearm on is not loose.

The disconnector may have some debris that causes binding, access to it is made by removing the 'Slide Support, Left'. Tread carefully in this area, lots of parts can come loose once that Slide Support is removed.

To get to the Slide Support the whole trigger guard assembly must be removed. At this point you have started field stripping and other major components may shift out of position. Consider learning the field stripping for cleaning procedure prior to attempting internal repairs.

Ya, I took it apart a few times inspecting it over but never got into the trigger assembly or bolt and just left them alone. Don’t seem to have a good gunsmith local and have a friend of a friend looking at it next week. Hoping he can see what’s up as the gun looks great and feels as solid as the 590’s I held at the shop this week. Was really hoping it’d be a simple and common issue but likely not. Thanks for the reply.

I’ll probably field strip it in the next few days now and check where you mentioned. Too stubborn not to.

I had a situation similar to yours with a Defender. Turned out that one of the action bars, while appearing to be solid, had broken away from it's spot on the slide tube, preventing the shotgun from firing. These parts are spot or induction welded and do come loose.

Take all the screws out and remove everything... you will get to know how much of a pain that trigger group is to work on...

Take a minute and look at the internals hard. Push out the pin in the receiver that retains the trigger group. Look at the bolt assembly and action bars and determine how they lock up with the trigger group. A very thorough look (coupled with studies of images on gooooogle) should let you know what is not functioning properly. It could just be debris or foreign object in the way of the workings. It could also be a broken or bent part. You may be able to sort it out yourself or maybe a gunsmith's services will be required. After that report your findings here for further support.

Took it apart multiple times for close inspection the first night but out of everything the trigger group mechanism sort of scared me for breaking it down. Looks like a watchmakers job tbh but was where I figured the issue may be due to the safety toggle lock up. I also tried pulling the trigger multiple times with the trigger group out trying to learn the roles of the springs and levers and such, only to read after online that you Do Not Pull the Trigger on a 1300 trigger group out of the chassis…so hoping I didn’t exasperate any issue with my curiosity. New to guns so scared me off a bit, but will try breaking it down again today and check the possible issues mentioned in this thread. Thanks for the replies and will see what I can find.

Field stripping again. Still suspect the trigger group but wondering if this could be an issue for allowing the bolt to lock into the barrel properly. The magazine tube seems to be a mm or two out of the receiver but too inexperienced to know the difference. Also unsure how it attaches to remove/reseat more flush. (Trying to figure out how to load a pic from iPhone as it doesn’t seem to upload for me)

Edit - couldn’t load the pic but realizing there is no stopper on the magazine tube anyways where the barrel band meets that would keep the barrel out of flush. Just the end cap holding it on. Barrel still meets flush to receiver.

Slide assembly seems fine. Took it all apart. Bolt seems fine, took it apart too.

I think you are in serious need of someone experienced with the 1200/1300 shotgun trigger assembly... I think someone has been monkeying with it - possibly trying to make the trigger better... and screwed it up... that's why it was given to you... the price was right, spend a little.

For sure. Pretty sure something in the trigger group is out of alignment/bent after going over it again the other day but not interested in taking that apart for the obvious reasons why. Will have someone with more experience look it over eventually. Also know someone with a 1300 so at some point so I may get a chance to drop their trigger group in and see if it fixes the issue. Bought a new 590 today and the shop owner has had them (1300’s) in the past and is also an amateur gunsmith for the most part afaik so will try there first. Really more an issue of reputable actual Gunsmith’s in my area is all. Not a cheap bastard lol. It’ll get fixed eventually but the 590 can hold me over till then. Really like the defender though, feels solid to me.
