Looking to identify my grandfathers old Winchester it’s in pretty rough shape.
Barrel is marked 32WS. I’m thinking it’s an old 1894.

And the .32 W.S. is the .32 Winchester Special, essentially the .30-30 necked up to .321"

If you want the serial number, it's on the bottom of the receiver forward of the triggerguard. As someone mentioned, you can figure out the DOM from that.

Looks like someone installed the rear sight backwards.

The leave it as suggestion is a good one. An old rifle seldom looks good with a new finish. Replace the parts that need replacing, especially the "scout" sight, and give 'er. The tape is most likely the result of a missing pin that holds the mag tube in place, or a worn dovetail. That rifle would not have had a "proper" barrel band on it. Also, depending on the vintage, it may have had the 32 rear sight on it. These were significantly different that the ramp and buckhorn style. Run the Googler on "Winchester 32 rear sight" for pictures.
Lots of ways to clean it up, without having it refinished. Having said that, were you planning on doing the work yourself?

Will lookup the proper rear sight for it. I was thinking to get someone to give it a refresh, not sure I have the right tools/talent to do it properly.
