Hi,

i have found a Winchester 1895 in caliber .30 US. and one in caliber .303. I have read that the .30 was a US military contract. I think the .303 is not a military contract.

Any idea about an approximate value? I need to sell a firearm lot and these are part of it.

Thanks, Fred

The .303 British is a standard sporting rifle with probably a 28 inch barrel. The other is a standard 1895 saddle ring carbine chambered in .30/40 Krag, I expect. Neither is military contract. The only 1895 model rifles that were military contract were the ones sold to Russia in 1915-1916. They were muskets chambered in 7.62 Russian.

There was also a U.S. Army contract for 30-40 Krag muskets, it was delivered too late for the Spanish-American war but made it to the Philipines later.

The Russian contract Muskets in 7.62x54R are very pricey and rare rifles, but super cool :)

Nice couple of rifles. For what it is worth, the Blue Book of Gun Values has the .303 Rifle at $750.00 in a 10% condition and the .30US Carbine at $825.00 in a 10% condition. I have purchased and sold a number of these. The most I have had to pay (a year ago) was $1100.00 for a .303 Rifle, but that included a factory Climbing' Lyman sight, which is quite rare and hard to come by. The most I have paid for a Carbine (7 months ago) is $1000.00 in fantastic shape and also including a Climbin' Lyman sight. Unfortunately the 1895's don't really seem to appeal to a lot of collectors like the other Winchester Levers do. Rifles like yours are nice pieces and fun to shoot, but if they were mine, I would be asking the $750.00 and $825.00 and hoping to get $600.00 and $750.00 for them. If you're interested in selling them, feel free to drop me a line. Now if these were '73's or '86's or .... then the cost would be up there. If you want a page print of the Blue Book, drop me a line. I don't know how to attach them to this, but I could email them.

Bear in mind "Blue Book" prices are based on needs and wants south of the border. Some prices compare to the Canadian equivalent others are completely out to lunch!!! In this case I think prices are close.
