I have a winchester model 1895 in .303 British. The barrel is gone.

Can I have it rebored in 35 Winchester? or can I get a new barrel in 405

Winchester? If so who does it in Canada wheter reboring or getting a new

barrel? I know that Turnbull restauration could do it, but it's a pain in the

neck sending it in the states .

Thanks

"...barrel is gone..." How do you know? Rusted? Finding another barrel will be an issue.
Reboring will cost a fortune. Requires a highly skilled smithy who has the right machines.
There's a guy on GunsAmerica with a refinished 1895 'Saddle ring carbine'. He wants $2900US for it. Your rifle, even with a bad barrel, may be too valuable to be doing anything to it.

Damned... There is a Winchester 1895 in .303 on the GCGA.ca website. Hasn't even been bid on yet. Opening bid is $575.

If it is worth that much...

Is it rusted or worn?

If rusted, probably caused by corrosive ammo, I would get a gunsmith to check it out to see if it is safe to fire it. Rusted barrels tend to increase the pressure to the point of making the gun dangerous to fire.

As far as a re-bore job, it will cost you around $300 so I would look for a used barrel first. If you have a gunsmith, leave it with him to look for a replacement barrel.

A choice also would be to sell the gun describing it completely and then buy a replacement one. Some people might want to add it to their collection and have no interest in firing it.

Good luck and would recommend checking with Ron Smith from Alberta if interested in a re-bore job.

Ken Waters did a pet loads on the 35 Winchester, it is a shame it and most of the other 35's have become obsolete.

The only detractor is the availability of 35 Winchester brass. It is longer than 303 Br or 30-40 Krag (30 US) brass. I'd be tempted to go to a rimmed version of the 35 Remington, but I'm pretty sure that would need a barrel setback.

My buddy has a 1895 in 303 Br, good shape except no rifling left. I've often though of it being bored out and shooting it.

A wildcat .338x.303 British with 1-10 twist would cure that or get Bob Jury to fit a new barrel in .303. Ron smith can do this as well.

A good cleaning and diamond lapping MIGHT make it a better shooter.
The 95 has a long chubby section of the barrel forward of the chamber and it might be hard to find a barrel blank that can give you that contour.
A nearby smith used to rebarrel .303 95's with Mosin-Nagant barrels, but there would be a slight gap in the stock in front of the chamber.

I've got an older Winchester 1895 with a crescent buttstock that needs a competent smith... willing to ship nation wide, can anyone help recommend someone?

Or, get him to rebore the original barrel. Even more cool factor....

Hence my suggestion at .338x303 re-bore

Here’s the 35-303 Br my friend shoots. The Speer 250 gr spitzer feeds like a fat boy at a buffet in his Lee Enfield. Imagine it would do okay in your 95 too.
