Since my walkabout rifle is a 270, I guess you know what I think of its uses.
One thing that is rarely thought of in NA is sectional density. We focus on calibre then bullet weight. However, history has shown us that even 'small' cals have enormous killing power if the bullet can drive through the vitals.
That was accomplished by using very long bullets. Bullets with high sectional density. This has allowed th 6.5 Swede to hammer all manner of game on every single continent. If bullet weight was the main criteria for killing ability, this cal would have faded decades ago. Ain't so...
So for my 270, I stoke them with 150gr SST at 3000fps. This gives me a flat shooter if I need to reach out a bit. Plenty of bullet for boiler room shots and the occasional shoulder. For those concerned about the fragile nature of the SST's, don't. At their designed impact velocities, they penetrate very well.
On deer, I have had several go lengthwise and exit, blast through 14" of spine, break shoulders. That should make it through a moose shoulder don't you think?
For close range encounters, I would certainly suggest this bullet weight. If you need any shot bullet placement, then definitely premiums all the way. If you have the time or mind set to take boiler room shots, then bullet choice widens.
