Just curious if anyone has a Winchester 490 semi auto .22, this .22 was made in Canada by Winchester after they bought out Cooey. It looks alot like a Winchester Model 100 center fire semi auto.I think it is a hell of a nice looking .22, well made and finished, beautiful trigger pull, much nicer than a Ruger 10/22, except i know the Ruger is more reliable.Don't hear much about the Winchester 490,so thought id' ask here to see if there a some 490 owner's on this forum

I had one for years but sold it recently to a CGN. Yes, designed to 'fit' with the Models 88 & 100, and felt like a full sized rifle. Cross bolt safety, solid steel milled receiver, jewelled bolt, metal magazines and parts, a nicely built rifle and costly at the time. It also had a faster twist to the rifling than just about any other rimfire that I could see. Very accurate. MUCH nicer than a 10/22. Don't know about the reliability part other than mine worked very reliably AS LONG AS you carefully fitted the magazine guide parts back together after disassembly.

No reason to not buy one.

My first 22 semi auto rifle and I still own it.....yes a very nice peice of ordinance.
In Nova Scotia it got occassionally used, but this rifle really proved its worth in South Sask.......I needed a new barrel and trigger group after almost 11 years shooting it like an IPSC racegun. My only beef was after firing about 300 rounds or so it would fowl up pretty good. The judicious use of WD-40 helped for about 100-150 rounds after which it needed a complete takedown and cleaning. The one very good thing about the 10/22 which I now have as well, is that I can shoot over 1000 rounds or there about before it needs a complete cleaning. Yes my winchester 490, came with a better trigger and I kind of believe a slightly better barrel. This excellant 22 has taken literally 1000s of gophers, about 250-300 rabbits,a raccoon, and two foxes. 8) 8) 8)
( not too sure about the rabbits because I still hunt them in alberta)
