Hey guys,

I recently aquired a Winchester 52B Sporter(Miroku/Japan).

I've been wanting a nice .22 for awhile now and this sure fits the bill!:)

It's in really good condition save for some hunting/handling marks in the high gloss finish... The marks wouldn't bother most people but I'm pretty fussy...

What would this rifle be worth in its present condition?

I'm wondering if I removed the high gloss finish and refinished the wood with oil would it adversely affect the value of the rifle?

ANY refinishing will alter the value of the gun... And since they are not yet "collectable", it would probably decrease the value.

In the US, they seem to be selling for +/- $650-$1,000. The few I've seen this side of the border have sold at around $600

This been said, it's your rifle, and unless you want to flip it for profit, I wouldn't loose any sleep whether it should be refinished or not. If you think you'll enjoy it more once re-done, I'd say go for it and let someone worry about the "value" later on.

Nice rifle by the way!

Thanks guys,

I'm just not a fan of a high gloss finish on wood... It's almost like it amplifies any little nick or scratch.

I had a couple of nice walnut stocked rifles that I had stripped the gloss off of and was amazed how nice the wood was after rubbing in some oil.

This is the first one of these I've ever came across so I don't want to do something that I may regret later...as I'm not one to keep anything very long...

Nice rifle try Howards Feed N Wax for the stock. Doubt that you are going to live long enough for that rifle to be come collectable, so if you want to refinish the stock go ahead, FS
