Hey all. I’ve been looking for some information/thoughts about this subject. I learned about the Winchester 70-150 experimental rifle(s) that were built in the late 1880s awhile back, in essence the idea was to the use the 1887 action, with barrel only rifled on the last 6 inches, to propel a beefy ol round down range. Now, the brass is just necked down 12 gauge brass, there are a few loads floating around out there for 600 grain and 900 grain projectiles, both in black powder and smokeless form. Has anybody seen much of these? Anyone thought of building one themselves?
If anybody could give some advice or share information, I’m all ears. I want to buy a Norinco (maybe a Chiappa would be better?) 1887 and find someone to make a nice octagon 70 caliber full rifled barrel for this.

Yes it’s ridiculous, no it’s not practical, and no, you can NOT talk me out of it :) the 1887 is my favourite range toy, I think an 1887 in 70-150 WCF would be jaw dropping and shoulder dislocating fun.IMG_4895.jpeg

I'm certainly not ever going to fire 150 gr of BP in any 87 action old or new manuf.
I can’t blame you, I’d probably like them loaded down a bit anyhow. Supposedly these new 1887s are incredibly tough but I can’t find much information about their maximum pressure online, aside from this IMG_5768.jpeg
Gonna do more scouting around to see what i can find from credible sources. I really want to make one of these peashooters.

It has been a very long time since I read an article on the 70-150, but if my memory serves, it was only ever an idea. To the knowledge of that gun writer (whose name I do not remember), no actual rifles were produced. The few original cartridges that are on the collector's market most likely came from Winchester ammunition display boards, one of which featured the 70-150 cartridge in the very center of the layout.
That said, if you do go ahead with the project, keep us informed! I've always been interested in that caliber despite it being as common as chicken teeth.

I’ve heard of a few “factory” 70-150 1887 examples being produced way back in the day, supposedly the head of Winchesters firearm quality control had one made up for himself, but who’s to say. The cartridge and its history are largely forgotten, but there’s still some folks out there who have built their own, one guy on YouTube has a channel practically dedicated to his 70-150 1887.
It’s been done a few times before now, I can’t see any reason why I wouldn’t be able to make it happen myself.

Thanks for the update! I was not aware of anyone trying to make one, but I suppose it makes sense.
Rifling the last few inches of the barrel was a trick done in England for Paradox guns. I think some of the big British gun makers are trying that again. I read somewhere one of them was producing Paradox guns again.
