Hey guys, I have line on a used model 70 Sporter in 30.06. It has a scope (not sure which model), and is clean with a few scratches on the stock. It hasn't been shot much. I will be taking a look at it tomorrow and shooting a few rounds off to see how she works. In any case, the seller is looking for 700 bucks for it. I might be able to haggle it down a bit but not much.

I realize that the type of scope on the gun will make a big difference, and might be able to advise of the scope in a bit, but want to see if you folks think that is a decent price for the gun (provided that it is in good working order and such).

Thanks in advance.

Oh the scope is a Bushnell 3200 2x7 I believe. The gun also has a sling, and the seller is willing to throw in an old single shot .22 rifle (which doesn't really matter to me either way).

I am just rather new to the world sporting rifles so want to see if you folks think that this is a decent deal or not. Again, he is asking for 700 bucks, but might go for somewhere between 6-700.

If the gun is the Newer Classic from the 90's or so with the controlled round feed, and it includes the 3200 scope/rings/bases plus a sling, I'd say its worth it. I had one until recently, and it was a super smooth operator, and downed several big black bears in violent fashion. I loved it. Had to sell due to money problems, but will certainly buy another down the road.

Hey sharp unfortunately I cannot say the exact manufacture date just yet.

Sgt Rock: I believe that the gun is one of the ones from the 90's or later. Did you have basically the same setup? 70 sporter 30.06 with a 3200 2x7 on it? I am basically looking at this to hunt deer and moose in Ontario. It is also left handed (as am I) which I guess is a bit harder to find I guess.

The guy selling it bought it to hunt and never too it out; basically put the scope on and put a few rounds through it to site it in and let it collect dust. He didn't store it too well as it has a couple of marks on the stock, but otherwise it is rust free and the action is smooth. The scope is already mounted on it.

I will have a chance to put my hands on it tomorrow and put the gun through its paces, and will likely either buy it (or not) tomorrow. So I basically wanted to see what some more educated sporting-rifle folks thought of this before I actually start to bargain.

Yup, Even if its a pushfeed winchester, they are pretty decent shooters too. I've owned both, but my .30-06 Win classic wood/blue with the bushnell was a real killer. I have rarely felt as "equipped" in the field than with that gun. It just felt "Right".

Do you know when they changed to controlled round feed? Is there somewhere on the gun that I can check for a production date regarding this?

There are very few LH model 70 rifles in standard calibers around. They are all CRF as John said and have a reputation for being smooth and well made actions. You should definitely buy it/
