I have my eyes on a Winchester 70XTR in 300 Win mag But a friend assures me it will kick like a mule and would be too much for me to handle. The price is right and the gun is in like new condition, Scope is not the best but I have a couple of good scopes suitable for long range precision. I was also told this calibre will stay supersonic at more than 1200 yards.
Question is, Does the 300 Win Mag have much more recoil than say a 308.

Yes, a .300 Win Mag is slightly less than double the case capacity of the.308, and will kick slightly less than twice as hard.

I would recommend firing one before buying if you have concerns over your own ability to handle the recoil. Most shooters can handle it with some practice, but it is beyond the capabilities of many others.

Thread moved the Hunting & Sporting Arms discussion.....

On the topic.... while the .300 Win Mag might beat you up shooting off the bench a bit, hunting it you likely won't feel the recoil as much.

If you reload, you'll find that 70 gr IMR 4350 behind a good 180 JSP bullet will likely shoot well in that Win 70XTR.

NAA.

Having actually been kicked by a mule I can assure you the recoil of a 300WM is definitely no where close but in the world of rifle recoil it is fairly stout. I suspect you are a newer shooter and in that case it may not be the best rifle but lots of people do shoot them well with no ill effects.

The key factor to managing recoil is a properly fitted stock and a good quality recoil pad. If you are a small framed young lady, a muzzle brake is another means of managing recoil and still retaining all the benefits of the 300 WM.
