Hi, I'm looking for a barrel to put back on the action of this Winchester 840. The barrel of my 12ga 840 can latch on the pin but doesn't lock all the way and the gun can't be cocked. I thought maybe it's in 16ga or 20ga. Any of you got an idea on how to find out? Maybe with the serial number it could give it out fir some of you guys.

Thanks

Barrel changes on break action guns as a general rule are not just grab another of the same model and gauge, put it on and away you go. They have to be fitted properly by a gunsmith or you could have a real issue on your hands as in you could get seriously injured if fired without being properly fitted

OP - you might want to check through parts lists - I think the Cooey 84, which became the Cooey-Winchester 840 (if that is same shotgun I am thinking about), was all same size everything, except barrel, from 20 gauge to 16 gauge to 12 gauge - pretty certain last time I went through this with my own, that all were the same parts until down to .410, which were different sized. As a result, on the 840 in 20 gauge I bought, was very surprised to see how thick barrels were at the breech - barrel is same size outside as a 12 gauge - same forearm, same breech, etc. So I would be a bit surprised if original gauge was marked on the receiver or the wood. But, DO HEED what Post #2 said - not "plug and play" to swap out - were never meant to be.

Most hinge action can and were fitted, timed, tightened, and can be re-fitted, re-timed and re-tightened as well.
