I know a guy that is selling a model 88 in 308. He tells me that it is a pre 64 (1958) manufacture. It is supposedly in great condition. He tells me wood and metal are great with some bluing wear on the bottom of the mag. I know these old winchesters have a following, so was wondering if anyone could give me a price range on what these normally go for and if there is anything in particular to look out for. Thanks in advance.

Owned a couple at one time not sure about the prices.Check for cracks by the pistol grip going to the back of the stock, they had a habit of braking off. I have seen a couple where the stock broke in two. Also it is a nice rifle.Good Luck on your purchase.

The Pre 64 models generally have cut checkering vs the Post with impressed acorn/fleur de lis. As has been pointed out, watch for cracks through the mag well area, they are very thin at this point.
Good rifles, but keep in mind there are no known replacement parts other than magazines and stocks.
308 seems the most common.

I have owned a half dozen 88's... they are a very solid platform... more accurate than BLR's IME... the prices have climbed on them over the past decade... for a very good condition original expect to pay $600+... for an excellent condition to as new condition, the price goes up from there... if you got it for $500, you made a good deal... but of course, condition is everything, so without pictures and an accurate description it is hard to say.

Thanks for all the info. I do have a couple of pics, but nothing that shows detail. It does have the cut checkering so I guess the year is correct. I am going to try to have a look at it in person this weekend , but I don't have high hopes. Even though he never mentioned a price, by the way he was talking, I think it's going to be high.
