Recently got a pre 64 winchester 1894 30/30.

I ran a box through the rifle - everything function fine other than the action was pretty stiff. I gave it a cleaning, no improvement, so decided to take it apart some.

Did a basic disassemble (just removed the lever and feed ramp) to give it a good cleaning (didn't force anything, don't think I bent or abused anything).. Put it all back together, lubed it up, but now something has gone wrong.

The first symptom was (with the action closed) the feed gate wouldn't open far enough to put a round in.. Through some peering around and slightly opening the action I could see the gate was hitting the side of the ramp (so the ramp was in the up position)

If I have the action open and push the ramp down it stays down where it should - I then can close the action and i can load the cartridges in via the gate just fine. When I work the lever, the ramp takes the cartridge up, it goes into the chamber, shoots fine.. then work the lever, it ejects fine, close the lever all the way, but the ramp isn't going down quite far enough to stay in the down position, so now the gate won't open.

I don't have any snap caps for it yet so it's a bit harder to figure out what is going on, but best I can tell the only problem is the ramp isn't getting pushed down quite far enough.. The screws are tight all around (read that could the problem) and everything looks normal best I can tell..

Any ideas? I can take some pics if needed.

Thanks for any help!

If you removed the lifter, when you put it back in, are you sure the screws went into their corresponding holes? If not, they impose lateral force on the lifter and bind it.
It should move both down and up with a snap.
Might be a worn lifter spring as well.
