I have a Win. 94 Legacy in 45 Colt. If I cycle the lever quickly, everything seems OK but if I go too slow - mainly on the upstroke, an extra round pops out of the tube and jams the lever. It happens with factory and homeloads and when the magazine is full/partially full or on its last round. I have to remove the endcap and spring to get the loose shell to fall back out and it is starting to really suck. Is it just due to that action being designed for a longer rifle round or do you always have to cycle really quickly or is it just my gun that does this. Thanks in advance.

I have a Winchester Trapper in 44 Magnum, with no troubles to speak of.
But Winchester has been making the M94 in this calibre since 1972 or so!?!

The Winchesters pistol calibre carbines/rifles,with feeding problems, seem to be 357s and 45 long colts, from what I have personally seen posted or heard of. These are more recent chamberings, perhaps in haste to manufacture them, shortcuts were used?

lever guns usually work better if you cycle them quickly. i had a 92 22 that jammed on slow cycles but preformed flawlessly if cycled quickly. the only problems i have had is off the bench when i haven't worked the lever with a little authority.

you also might want to change your bullet type if you can - or the seating depth- my trapper in 44 mag wouldn't feed 44 swc's and yet factories were no problem- changed the seating depth with the swc's and now no problem- it was set too long( for my redhawk) and the nose was shoomshing on the way in to the chamber

Thanks for the replies. In order: the jamming seems to happen if I stop or hesitate at the "apex" of the cycle; the gun is about 4 years old and has had less than 500 rds through it so wear may not be the cause; I don't have any 357 or 44 brass handy but is the rim more pronounced on the 44 giving the action more to grab onto? As far as bullet type, the factory rn and my handloads using Hornady hp and Speer fp all seem to chamber/feed smoothly, its just that extra round that pops out when it shouldn't. Basically I just need to know if its a problem that can be fixed by a smith or does it need factory attention or am I just stuck with it. Thanks again.

well, there is NO more winchester, so you're stuck with having to get a smith to solve your problem, and there's typically a 1 year warranty on guns if there is one at all- however, the 94 has been around so long there SHOULDN'T be a problem finding a smith to work on it- i've not had the problem you speak of, but mine's a vintage 93-

I had the same issue with my 94 BB 356. It was the shell stop. I brazed a bit of bronze to it and reshaped it a little higher. Usually if cycled briskly there should be no problem. If you go slowly and the shell stop is worn or too low the shell will slip under the carrier and cause a jam. Another site to check is leverguns.com.

I double checked the problem with some dummy rounds and it seems like a "timing" problem. On the upstoke, If I don't go fast enough the shell stop moves down and the carrier or ramp doesn't get under the next round before it exits the magazine. Iceman2 - your fix sounds right for me. I am going to check the links and leverguns.com. Thanks guys.
