K - here's my dealio. I have never owned lever actions and don't know much about them. I got two pre 64 win 94's at the same time, in good internal condition with lots of cosmetic wear. Internally they were clean and very crisp.

Both guns *kindof* jam up at the loading gate when loading. I say kindof because both require cross pressure to keep the bullet pointing as much along the gun as possible while pushing it forwards into the mag. If too little cross pressure is provided, the bullets seem to hang up internally and wedge in. Then it takes a little fiddling and it pops out. Also the gate seems to hang up on the back of the round occasionally, almost like the primer is raised and catching, but regardless of if there's even a primer in the bullet.

My theories:

A) bullet is too long. The tip of the bullet is lodging against the far side of the mag tube. - Only have one kind of ammo, so can't eliminate this.

B) mag tube is over protruding or flared, or there's a burr. It could be catching on the case kneck/rim. - took one apart, cleaned it thoroughly, found nothing.

C) loading gate spring is too strong. - don't know, both seem about the same

D) your theory - ?

Since I don't know lever actions, I don't know if this is just something that must be accepted and learned.
IE - mosin nagants use rimmed single stacked ammo - the last round must be slightly ahead of the rest or it will snag. That's just the way it is, as a design flaw, and if you know how to deal with it it isn't a problem.

Yes, it sounds normal.
Use another round to push that last round forward a bit, it will save your pinky from getting snapped.
If the loading gate should close while you are loading, and it won't open again, simply drop the lever a fraction, and you'll be able to open it again. Holding it open, close the lever, and continue loading.
Sounds more complicated than it is.
Holding the receiver in your left hand, so that your fingers reach the loading gate, insert a cartridge part way, and hold it there, with the fingers of your left hand. Push it the rest of the way home with the next cartridge, stopping when it is partly through the gate, continue with the next, and the next, until you have the rifle loaded, finishing, as I said at the beginning, with an extra cartridge, the one that you may want to put in the chamber directly.

x2 The casings seem to get hung up on the mag tube. I took my guns apart and smoothed the rim a bit with a round file. Still catches sometimes but the 1/2 in and 1/2 out has reduced the problem significantly.

I had to replace the carrier spring on my Grandpa's 1894 /38-55 as it was worn and wouldn't load unless the lever was partially open. The loading gate would freeze.Found one in Montana for $6 at an old gunsmith's and snapped up a spare on e-bay before the anti gun crap they now enforce.Harold

NO! Your thinking Enfields.

Two totally different animals.

The Mosin has a small cartridge cut off that prevents this... Double check your Mosin as it may be missing.

Hmmm - in that case, would putting a weaker gate spring in cause any problems elsewhere? My gf's fingers aren't really strong enough to reload it a lot with the gate as it is.

On a side note - calum, if you're talking about the tab on the left side that also serves as an extractor that allows the 2nd round to move up when the first is ejected, all of mine have that, and are complete.... just that the cartridges do still jam... only thing I can think of is that I'm not pushing the 2nd round down far enough and it's actually being held in place by the mag and jamming the first one in place.

In the case of the Winny I'd say as others have said the springs are tired and need replacement.

As for the Mosin I suspect you need to push the cartridge further in to the mag well.

This is something you must learn cause they don't teach it,with a shell in the mag take your middle finger and push down hard on the kings gate door,it will hinge or pop back(it is kicking the shell back a little)then you can push the next shell in and so forth!

You must trust the system cause it will take a little steady force.
