Hey, Ive got a 94 that was gramp's before he passed away and I believe it is a post 64, but it has a steel but plate.

The serial number starts with 33, and vie read that anything past 27 is post 64, but that they went to a plastic buttt plate.

Any thoughts?

The numbers you were given are correct.
The serial numbers after start up change start about 2,700,000.
The serial number on your rifle will coincide with the date of manufacture, regardless what the buttplate is made of. It could have been replaced.

How many digits in the serial #?

Can't tell the approximate vintage unless you provide that info....... People usually quote their serial number in this fashion when looking for info:

3311### or something like that by using X's not to reveal the complete serial number.

Duke1

PS. For example, serial number 3,300,00 would be a 1970 vintage where s/n 330,000 would be a 1905 one.

3337_ _ _

It doesn't look more than 40 years old, but its hard to tell cause he didn't use his rifles too much.

I am very doubtful the butt plate was replaced. He didn't use his rifles much, but wasn't meticulous about replacing things or maintenance either.

If the serial number is what to go by then it must be a post 64, but I thought Id see if the wisdom on this forum had more insight into this.

Thanks.

1970.

The last year of really crappy manufacture.

They were awakening to this fact, and were starting to improve things.

By some time in 1971, the '94 wasn't a bad rifle at all. Still not a pre-64, but at least the stamped parts were gone.

Look at you cartridge lifter, it's probably stamped steel, that was the biggest idiocy they did to that rifle. The other thing was a cheap stamped rear sight.
Some of these rifle work fine, others are continual headaches.

If the lifter is not stamped steel, the rifle is likely just fine as a shooter.
