Question for other new FN/Winchester Alaskan owners. Does the stock "fit " you well? For me with the high-comb I can barely use the iron-sights and with low rings I find I have to adjust my cheek to get a proper sight-picture. I hate the thought of modifying the comb and shouldn't have to go to medium rings. Is it just me? Other than that I love the rifle.
Any other owners care to chime in?
Merry Christmas
Geoff

I have to bury my cheek into the gun also. It took some practice to become adjusted to the iron sights but once I did I was fine. I know have a 1-4 power 20mm tube Leupold on it in medium rings and it great. Accuracy is amazing too with my hand loads. Mine is a 375.

[/IMG]I found the same thing with mine. I could not contort my face enough to use the iron sights. that wasn't a big deal for me as my eyes are such I can no longer use open sights anyways. I mounted a 1x5 Leupold on mine I think with low rings and it fits me perfect. I really like the rifle, mine is also a .375, and it shoots nice groups with 260 gr. Nosler partitions or accubonds. I recut the checkering added an ebony grip cap and fore end and refinished the stock on mine just because I wanted to.

Very nice MRGOAT. At least I know it's not just me be over analytical. With "lows" I get a good sight-picture, but only when I mash my cheek in to it. Here's pic of my .338 w/2.5-8 Leupold. Note:re-drilled holes on Rear Leupold base to move it back about 1/4".

Don't know about a short neck, but I hate crawling up a stock to get a crisp scope picture. I usually mount the scope snug in the rings, hold the gun at my side, close my eyes and mount the gun naturally, then open my eyes, and adjust the scope in the mounts accordingly. I repeat that several times. Then I move the scope a head about 1/8" just to give a bit extra eye relief. I can't mount a Leupold 2.5x8 even with extended bases and rings to suit me. So I use Leupold 3.5 x 10 scopes as they have longer tubes. Just the way it is and works for me and has for 40 yrs. Here a picture from another post that shows where my scopes mount to suit me they vary a bit depending on stock dimensions.

I had a machinist buddy of mine re-drill the holes of a rear Leupold 2-piece base so that it does not hang over the loading port. More for esthetics than anything. I'll see if I can get a close-up pic that shows this.

Explain a little further if you may how you modified/drilled the bases. Hard to see in the picture.

I do exactly the same thing. If it works it works.

the comb is not high its just the heel drop cutout that makes it look that way. i found that the stock was thick at the comb thats why the irons are so hard to use. not a good stock design for a gun with irons.

Tell ya What.... Those featherweights are really something!!

I want/need and almost must have one , if I didn't buy the Ruger No1 303, id be shopping for a 308 FW

cheers

Here is my 375 with a 1-4 Leupold. Gun shoots amazing but yes, more thought should have been considered when designing that stock. Maybe they didn't shoulder or test fire it before they ran the production. I love the gun none the less anyway though....

One set of mass produced dimensions can't possibly fit everyone.

As one who typically complains that most stocks are too low for me,
it's a relief to find one that actually fits or is too high. It's easy enough
to take a comb down for a good fit ... trying to make it higher is a major
pain in the butt. No matter what, a great fit for iron sites is still a tad low
for a perfect scope fit. I find it's one or the other ... not both.

When I bought my 375 H&H although I had intentions of putting a scope on it anyways, I had to be comfortable using the open sights or what's the point of even having them? I initially wanted the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express but found that I had to mash my face into the stock to line up the sights. I would hate to be in that position and add the effects of recoil. That's why I bought the CZ 550 American Safari. It was very comfortable to bring up.
