Good evening fellow hunters, curious as to which you would prefer if you were given the choice.

Let's say you're hunting a moose, with a 308. Would you go with a 168gr Winchester ballistic silver tip or a 180gr Remington core lokt sp?

Whatever is on sale

Agree, they are both cup-and-core bullets. The BT just has a plastic tip and boat tail. Some say boat tail bullets are more prone to over expansion, but I don't think it would matter much at .308 velocities. I would go for the 180 just because I like 180's in .30-cal.

I'm right in there as well, unless the ballistic silvertips were gotten at a fantastic price i'd probably just go with the 180gr coreloks.

I'm always amazed that fellow hunters will spend thousands on rifles, optics and equipment.. but want the absolute cheapest ammunition possible.
Literally the ONE final component to your hunt is that bullet...

Ammo is alot of marketing and fancy boxes.

Dad always had the cheapest Federal brand from Canadian Tire..I think there was 30 in a box back then, never had camo and used iron sites.

Same as all his friends, it's true all the shots were 100 yards and under, but I bet that's true for most hunters.

$1000 scope, $80 ammo, scents, calls, special laundry soap, shampoo and $800 in camo is just an extravagant expenditure most don't need.

Remington Core lokts 180 grain SP took 2 northern Ontario moose. 1 at 375 meters and 2 at 425 meters. First took 2 hits and second took 3 hits both in the lung area. Oh, and it was out of Remington 770 30-06.

In my experience the 168 ballistic silver tips always shot very well in my 30-06. But were hard to find on a regular basis. The 180 Core locks didn't have the same level of accuracy in my rifle. But each gun could produce different result. For me accuracy is #1 in my books. Most bullets will do what they need to do - when the shot is well placed.

Use the bullet that shoots best in your rifle.
Both will kill moose just fine when placed accurately in the vitals!

I will admit that I am partial to the 180 gr bullets in 30 cal rifles, whether it be 308, 30-06 or 300 (regardless of case ; Win, WSM, Wby, RUM, etc.), but that is just me...and I have used Power Points, Nosler Partitions, and Nosler AccuBonds successfully over the years.
I have acquired some of the 300 WSM Federal Terminal Ascent ammo to try in my rifle, as I have been impressed with the performance of the 130 gr Terminal Ascent ammo in the 6.5 CM, accuracy wise and in on-game performance so far this year (red stag, fallow buck, arapawa rams and caribou).

What!! You mean I don't need that $90,000 super duper big dually jacked up three feet off the ground? Don't forget the range finder, satellite phone, etc.

Many hunters are aware that marketing plays a huge role in said purchases. Take deer for example. If you listen to ammunition manufacturers you need bullet A for this situation, bullet B for that situation and bullet C just in case. When in reality practically any old hunting bullet is perfectly fine for all 3 situations.

What’s truly amazing is how gullible many hunters are and how successful marketing is at taking their money ;)
