Winchester Big Bore 94 action locking up...

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked 1000 times before, I couldn't find anything with the search menu. Anyhoo... My Model 94 in 375 winchester has developed an annoying habit of locking itself closed after loading the magazine tube. If I lay the rifle on its side, and load the magazine tube, the action will lock itself so It can not be fully opened to toad the rifle. Gently wiggleing the lever, the trigger, and a good bit of cursing will get it to open eventually. My work around, has been loading the guns magazine while holding the action upright rather than laying on its side on the table. This reduces the frequency of the problem occuring greatly. The lock-up has not occured after firing a round and working the action, only after loading the magazine. Any ideas or similar problems?

The lever-retaining crosspin that goes through the lever and through the bolt may be drifting out and catching on the inside of the action. Laying the gun down on its left side would definitely make this worse. Check that the cover screw, which is on the left-hand side of the receiver, just behind the chamber, is screwed all the way down or that the point of it has not broken off.

I had a .307 Win 94 that did the same thing. Never did get it figured out. Sold it to my brother. He feels the first shot is the most important anyway. This in no way will help you. Just to let you know that it has happened before.

Thanks very much for the help Barry, (and the moral support Daryl), you were absolutely correct. I had had a sidemount scope rail on the gun which I had taken off. As I did not have a screw the right length to plug the opening with the scope rail off, I had built a washer to make the exhisting screw the right lenght to do the job. Guess what, I got the washer to thick so the end of the pin could catch in the remaining hole. I rebuilt my washer so that it is the correct thickness, and have not had any malfunctions when I was playing with it last night.
