I know this might sound like a '' DUMB'' question, but can anyone tell me the difference between a 30-30, a .30 WCF and a .32 Special. I was under the impression that a 30-30 and a .30WCF was the same cartridge, and the .32 Special was slightly bigger. But a discussion with my dad made me doubt as My dad said he had a .30WCF in his younger days, and it seem that the 30-30 ammo was fitting a bit loose in it. I Replied that he probably had a .32 Special and that was probably why the 30-30 was fitting loose. But he keep saying that his rifle was a .30 WCF.

Can anyone tell me If I am right or wrong ?
 
Our 30/30 was called the .30wcf in its early days, the .32 special came a year or two later and is the 30/30 necked up to .321". To add to the confusion...there is a .32 WCF which is the .32/20.....oh and don't forget about the .32/40 Winch. which predates the 30/30 or .32 Special by 10 years or more. Apparently Winchester used this naming system to differentiate their ammo. from similar numbered rounds from Rem. and Marlin.
 
And I can still remember two old timers telling the story of getting nailed by a fish and game cop for poaching, being hauled in before the judge, and getting off because the ammo they had in their pockets didn't match the rifle!
