Purchased and want to install VX 3 2.5-8 Leup. on a new win featherweight. Am having ring space problems as Leupold bases don't allow it to be mounted (Space between rings is too long for the small scope length unless the bases hang over the receiver).. So am guessing to go with Weaver so the rings can be set closer together to accomodate the scope size.. Any suggestions??? Thanks

Hmmm.......

I'm currently waiting for the same scope to come in the mail - it will be going on a new Featherweight .243. I also purchased Talley's (blued steel) to mount it. I figured I should be alright due to the short action.

What cal. is yours?

06, scope is just too short, tried 2 styles of Leupolds, one hung over front, other hung over rear, both by 3/8-half inch.. ?? let me know aboout the talleys if they work out for you..

I had exactly then same problem, and even with extended bases I could not mount the scope far enough rear ward to fit me, without crawling up the stock when I mounted the rifle.
The V3 Leupold in 3.5x10 has a longer tube than the 2.5x8. So I traded the 2.5 in on the 3.5. Since Epps could not mount the scope to suit me switching scopes was not an issue.

Anyways the 3.5x10 with the extended bases puts the scope exactly where I what it. I have three M-70's, 30-06, 375HH, and a .243. I have a Kimber 8400 in 30-06 and the same issue arose, it has a 3.5x10 with extended Leupold bases as well.
The newer scopes all seem to have shorter tubes, they say it is to reduce weight. But it is a pain in the a$$ to mount them. The old steel Weavers had much longer tubes and were a breeze to mount as there was a lot of room for fore aft adjustment.
There is probably more than one way to skin the cat and perhaps your body dimensions differ from mine. But this is the way I solved the issue.

Burris tru-mount universal bases with standard rings or leupold dual dovetail bases and rings will work. Mounted the 2.5-8 on my fn produced long action featherweight. Suited me just fine but there is very little room for adjustments.

You can get the leupold with standard front & rear , reversible rear and standard front or reversible front and era . I believe the reversible rear & standard front will work. Otherwise get the reversible front and rear. DO NOT spoil the aesthetics of the rifle by going to a rail.I don't think the talley's will work. Go into a gunshop with the rifle and set out different options for bases and you will find that one of the leupold combos will work If you need the scope more rearward the reversible front with a front extension ring will bring it back Most people try eye relief from the standing position Place you elbows on the counter and peer through the scope. You eye will be further from the scope in the standing position than any other.

If you look closely, you will see that I have the extended rings and the scope JUST fits in regards to eye relief. I have very long arms so if you are not a big guy you may want to go the route of extended base. I have dual dove tail bases.

On my M70 .338 I mounted a Bushnell Elite 6500 Rifle 30mm 1.25-8x and had a problem where I couldn't get the right eye relief with the regular bases.

Went with Warne 30MM Maxima Tactical Rifle Base and TPS TSR "W" Low Steel Rings. Problem solved. :)
