Hi there,

Does anyone know the internal magazine length of a model 70 LA? I am curious to know the length of a 300 WM and what the maximum OAL the inside magazine box will allow.

Thanks

The action is a true magnum length and will accommodate a 375 H&H. I replaced the mag box and follower in mine which allowed me to seat heavy VLD bullets out to 3.9" max. You should be fine to load just about anything out to touch the lands if you do the mag box/follower mod. The only other point is that you will have to modify the ejector to allow the long rounds to ride high enough to strip out of the magazine (it's not a tough mod and you could probably buy a new one from Brownell's if you don't want to tackle the project). You may also have to modify the rear point of the feed rails to hold the cases tight against the rails. Usually the rear of the rails curves inward due to the milling process but the mod can be done at home if you're patient and take your time.

Thanks for the quick response. I would be more comfortable if a gunsmith done. Do you know of any smiths who could do this?

I'm sure that lots of guys could handle the feed rails and the extractor. I've been friends with Rick at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply in Calgary for 15 years (holy crap...it's been a long time) so I would call him first. Like I said, it's not a difficult job and there are probably lots of guys that could handle the job. The feed rails at the last 1/4" at the back of the opening curve inwards and they have to be filed square and straight in line with the rest of the rail. The extractor mod is dead simple too but it you're not confident then you shouldn't feel bad about getting a smith to do it. Someone will do it for sure and it will only cost you a couple of hours of shop time.

Where are you located? It helps with the recommendations to try to find a local smith. And it makes life easier in the EE as well.

Thanks. I am presently in the north Cariboo.

The reason why I am inquiring about the LA Win action is because I am in the market for a new rifle and the extreme weather series from Winchester has caught my eye especially in a 300 WM. I want to stay with the 30 cal bullet and I have narrowed it down to the WSM or the WM. Too many choices I guess.

I hunted around Williams Lake and used my M70 300 Winchester to my complete satisfaction. I ended up rebarreling it when the barrel went sour and built it as a LR rig, hence why I ended up modifying it for the H&H-length mag so that I could run 208 AMax or 210 Bergers touching the lands. For general hunting in that neck of the woods I wouldn't have a problem with the standard 300WM seated to 3.34" or whatever works in your particular rifle.

Talk to Al at Chilcotin Guns in Williams Lake...he may have a more local 'smith.

Talk to Glen Ford at Blue Mountain Gunsmithing in Williams Lake. He bought Gordon Mayfield's business when Gord retired and moved it to a new location on Mackenzie Avenue.

Why was there never a gun plumber right in town when I lived there?

Glen has started talking about expanding the size of their retail operation. Pretty soon it will be a true "One stop shopping" place.

Jack Simpson has also set up his fishing shop in the building.

Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely have him check it out. I will stick with the factory magazine box for this season and will have it expanded to allow better bullet seating.
