I just picked up a Winchester Mod 70 Classic, stainless, synthetic, in 338 win mag. Its the pre-64 action (Controlled Round Feed).

Picked it up, brand new, for a price I could not refuse!! Believe me, for a new gun there is no one out there that would have said "no". :D :D :D

I plan on getting the trigger re-done, (must be like 5 lbs? Way hard  ), glass bedded and barrel floated, and a nice crown cut.

Any suggestions from other 338 owners or people with experience with this type of action? Any other things I should be looking at altering or replacing?

My field of experience is mainly tactical stuff. I picked this up as a new hunting rig, has a leopold 3-9x40 scope on it which I already own on another rifle.

I got some Barnes 225grn TSX and Nolser accubonds to reload and try with some RL19 and IMR 4831.

Any advice other owners could offer would be great!

:D

Don't have one but if I was going to buy a Winchester Model 70 (I have been thinking about it) that is exactly the model I would look at. Let us know how it shoots when you start playing with it.

They are a nice gun, some can shoot well out of the box and don't need anything modified. The actions are super strong and beefy, which is quite apparent when you take the action out of the stock.
Unfortunatly all the winchesters I have owned have needed some massaging to get acceptable accuracy from them. Basic bedding and reloading has usually done the trick.
My 300wsm ultimate shadow was already floated when I got it but If I keep it I'm going to get a new stock for it cause I don't care for the stock thats on it, maybe something in laminate?

My 338 is a remington but I am itching to try 225 accubonds out of it once I burn up the 250gr Partitions that I have.

Good luck and keep us posted

I've gotta ask - Why the recrown job ? Is Winny noted as having an issue in this area ? Or are you going to have it shortened, to a handy 20" or so ?
