I looked and couldn't find a post about this but there probably is. I've had this happen a few times years ago and had a smith look at it and replace the cocking spring. It didn't fix it but I still kept the rifle. It's happened to more than 1 rifle as well but just when target shooting. This was well before I got really heavy into collecting the 88 and 100s. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the rifle. Posted is a write up Winchester did about this happening dated Oct 3 1960.
Just thought anyone here that's collecting them might find this of interest and save them taking the rifle to a smith or stripping it down themselves !
