So,

I've looked and can't find a Q&A, FAQ, etc for the model 12 on CGN. If I somehow missed it please tell me!

I want to start something to differentiate the various models, and how to modify them for trench Configuration. I also want to do a side-by-side teardown and show what parts are the same, and which ones aren't.

I've got a Heavy Duck and a normal take down model, to start off with.

Note: no matching Model 12 was harmed for the trench gun conversion, I used a second, non-matching barrel! ;)\

What I'm interested in finding out is if a FW can be converted to a Trench gun without any permanent modifications to the original gun.

Takedown Mechanism

The takedown mechanism is the same for the Heavy Duck (HD) and the normal Model 12 (M12). The Featherweight (FW) is reportedly different, but it's still a takedown arrangement.

Receivers

The receivers are almost the same, the only exception that I can see is the enlarged ejection window on the HD, to accommodate the longer 3" hulls.

Dimensions and depth and threads on these are the same.

Mechanically, the 2 3/4" barrel fits and locks in the HD receiver, and vice versa. Now I know that one shouldn't fire 3" shells from a mismatch combination, but I wonder if a HD receiver, mated to a M12 barrel, could safely discharge a 2 3/4" shell. I don't see why not though.

Trigger group

The trigger groups are exactly the same.

(I got the HD like this, I'll clean it as I'm going along)

This is where the Featherweight model should be different/lighter as it is made with alloy and not steel.

Bolt

Bolts to me look exactly the same. The HD one is actually 4g lighter, even with all the crap on/in it! If someone could machine a Titanium M12 bolt, that would be incredible!

Cartridge Cutoff

I noticed that the HD one (top) had additional machining at the pivot point. I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes in the mechanical side of things, but it could be noticeable. The little hook part is also approx 1mm longer on the HD component. (I'm talking about the little hook on the top right of both pieces)

I sold my very clean 16g for $450 to another CGN member. I must have priced it too low as it was sold in 3min. The buyer was quoted saying it was the cleanest 16g he has seen. I’m glad it went to a good home and can be enjoyed for many years to come.

I have to review this thread (thank you) more closely as I’m looking for a heavy duck 12g.

Aye. The HD I have is a 30" (maybe 32 i don't remember at the moment) Full choke. To use any black cloud steel shot, I'd either need to cut the barrel back so it can behave as as Mod choke, or find a Mod HD model... Ugh, no easy wins!

I'd rather not cut a HD matching serial barrel, as there are far fewer of these than normal M12s. I guess I could look for a spare HD barrel and cut that one, or keep it stock if it's Mod.

There are 20ga and 16ga in the EE as we speak
Priced pretty much as they should be IMO
Cheers

Really? wtf.. is it just me or is the search engine wonky?

Also, My preferences are 12g, 20g and then the elusive model 42 (if it's cheap, goes to priority 1)

In the end, I'd really like an unmodified 3" model 12 that can fire off BC close range steel shots! :) Might need to sell my normal model 12 with a Mod barrel to do this though.

a 20g slamfire sounds incredible though

Trapshooters.com will have more information than you could read in a week about model 12s.

I have a factory modified barreled 20 gauge, which I have never shot.

Model 12s have had just about every modification possible done to them. I have a trap gun that I shoot on occasion, which just crushes targets, but it slaps my face. I've tried a couple of things, with some success, but 50 targets is about it.

Must be you I still see the 16ga and 20 ga . One is too high and not worth it but the other 20ga looks clean

One of the 16ga
Winchester Model 12 in 16 Gauge. 2 3/4" full choke. Stock is slightly discolored due to have a recoil pad extension. Minor hunting handling marks. 7.5/10 condition. $425 shipped

You are dreaming using the word model 42 AND cheap. No such thing
Cheers

Ain’t that the truth! I need a 42 and a 61. Neither are cheap.

They are not going to get any cheaper either from what I have seen on the EE since joining here. This may shock you but I don't own a sample of either unfortunately :( and don't even remember having a chance to buy either over the years here
Cheers

That model 12 16 bore has a 30" barrel. A very rare configured 16 gauge model 12. Having said that it would take a real model 12 guy to appreciate that barrel length and there are not many of us left. I have the following experience with model 12 16 bores, early guns require mods or short shells to run right. Most later guns (all I have owned) have ejection issues with 99% of current factory hulls. Some Remington game loads run OK. Forget any of the Euro hulls they are just too long. I love the Model 12 16 gauge but they are mostly a hassle if you are a shooter more than a collector. I know short shells are available and you can reload but that again is too much trouble for me. Of course you can smith the gun to work but that is some trouble I don't need also. Now I know someone will be along saying his model 16 bore he got from Uncle Joe in 1960 runs everything without a hiccup. Great you have a very rare individual gun that does that.
