Hi, I just received a Winchester model 12 shotgun from my mother in law, it was her granddads and Im the only one in the family who shoots so I got it lol. I am unfamiliar with them and am having some difficulties with it. It took me a bit to figure out how to get the barrel attached ( the shell tube was turned the opposite way to start so had to fiddle around to figure that out. My main issue is that the bolt is locked to the rear in the receiver. I cant for the life of me figure out how to unlock it, I thought the slide bar from the pump might just reach inside and unlock it when I assembled it but that doesnt seem to work. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance as I know someone will know lol one of you always does.

So the bolt has always been stuck to the rear since you got it? It may have been put back together wrong, not that hard with these. Some good youtube videos on how to do it.

Take the gun down again. Remove the screw at the rear of the trigger assembly. Carefully remove the assembly. This should allow a look at what is holding the bolt back. Play with it a bit they tend to bind and stick when they are out of battery in the receiver. The cartridge interrupter should fall out when you remove the trigger assembly this is normal. If you can un jam it the bolt can be pushed back into battery and the bolt retaining lever must be shifted to hold the bolt in place. Look at the bottom of the bolt (right side from underneath) the bolt retaining lever appears to be a two ended pivot. With the bolt held in battery pivot one end or the other to retain the bolt for reassembly. I know this is hard to follow but a look at a parts scheme can help a lot.

Thanks, yes the bolt has been locked back since I got it ( yesterday ) it was disassembled in an old leather custom box/case ( her grand father won the Canadian open golf Tournament 2-3 times in the 20’s I think so he had money to get a monogrammed case for it, I think it’s a 1914 according to the serial number, it’s like 73567 or something close ) I did look at some videos on disassembly online but wasn’t sure if it would damage the firearm trying to disassemble it with the bolt locked back, didn’t want it releasing and losing a fingertip lol I wasn’t sure if there was a catch or safety I was missing, guess not, I’ll give it a whirl carefully tomorrow.

With the barrel assembly off take the butt stock in hand and swing the action downward with force stopping abruptly with the action towards the floor... you may have to do this more than once... but the action normally with slide forward in the action... when it does - with the safety disengaged - pull the trigger, the hammer will fall holding the bolt in place for assembly of the barrel...

If the bolt does not move forward you need to take the trigger assembly out of the action and move the bolt ahead and flip the little mechanism that locks it ahead on removal of the barrel and magazine.

Let us know if that works.

It may be the extractor blocking the bolt from moving forward too. It is located on the left side of the receiver(right side when receiver is upside down). Make sure it is seated properly. The round end needs to be seated flat and flush with the spot milled in the receiver side it is meant to be sat in and often after ensuring it's seated properly you need to depress the flat end with a finger tip to allow the bolt to move forward over it on it's way to the forward position in the receiver. If the extractor is not seated properly you cannot move the bolt, it's like it's stuck in cement and the slide arm cannot pick up the bolt to bring it forward as it does not align with it properly.

When y th he trigger assembly is out and the bolt is at the back of the action the ejector is still in place that in its self will the bolt back .
Take your fingers and simply push the bolt ahead it is not stuck that is how it sits in place once u move the bolt s head there is a little lever on the right side of the bolt looking in from the top when the bolt is completely forward u take a small screw driver and move the lever in what ever direction it will move that will lock the bolt in place if this not done you will never be able to assemble the gun every time u put the action arm in the reciever it will push the bolt back and you will be back at square one .
Not likely you will get it the first time . Your best bet would be to take to someone that knows model 12 ‘s have gem dhow u .
1914 that is a cool piece of it is still in solid working order

Follow the instructions that Struff55 gave you. Once the bolt is in forward position make certain the ejector is in the correct position behind the bolt. You're ready to slip the trigger assy. into position, but before you do, you must correctly position the shell cutoff. It's important to position this correctly. You'll see the round hole where it pivots in the receiver but you must position the front of the cutoff into the small slot at the front of the receiver where the magazine meets the receiver. Once you have the shell cutoff correctly positioned you must hold the receiver upside down and lean it to the right to maintain the cutoff in position. Slide the trigger assy into postion and if you've done everything right, it should be ready to reinstall the barrel assy.
