Looking for some old black and white pictures of the Winchester 1886 with a straight stock and round barrel in use by hunters.

Also how popular was that configuration back then?

I've seen quite a few pics of 86 Winchesters in books about trophy hunting in New Brunswick 1890 thru 1930. NB was known as the sportsman's paradise in those years. In the early 1890's seems like octagon barrel configuration seemed common but in the early 20th century round barrels took over especially the 45/70 Extra light weight with shorter barrel and shotgun butt plate.

In the later years that was quite common. All of the 1886's in 33 WCF that I've seen were configured like that. Less common in the older calibres though. I have seen a number of 38-56's and 45-70's configured that way. But I believe the majority of the riflemen back then preferred octagonal barrels.

Chris.
