Looking for some advice from anyone who is familiar with the Winchester model 1904 single shot .22

I have one of these that belonged to my grandfather. It is in horrible condition, including a missing stock stud screw. It had been used with the stock and barrel taped together since likely 1957 or earlier.

I recently bought a stock stud screw from Numrich. It was listed as a model 60 part, but compatible with the model 1904. It is 1" long (as shown on other sights as the correct length for the 1904)The screw appears to be a little too short. Only about 1 thread is exposed on the inside of the stock. Would it make sense to remove the ring thingy on the bottom of the stock (where the stock stud screw goes in*) and working the wood to make it sit farther into the stock. This should allow the screw to sit a little deeper, exposing more threads to the stock stud. I may be able to get the escutcheon installed under the ring this way as well.

*The ring thingy can be seen on two of the stocks in this photo
