Hello, I picked up a 1984 manufactured in 1906-1909 depending on what site you’re looking at.
How do I tell if it’s original bluing?

Thanks

If you take a look at the serial number you may be able to tell if it has been reblued. If the edges of the numbers are blued it's likely that it has been refinished. Not 100% sure if this holds true for every manufacturer but I believe the serial numbers were stamped after blueing... perhaps a Winchester expert can confirm.

I’m no expert, but to me it doesn’t look like it’s been redone!
Model 94, not 84.

Lettering all looks crisp around the edges, not filled in by later bluing. Looks to be original from that standpoint. Nice rifle. My 80 year old hunting partner and friend just tipped over a real nice 5x6 Whitetail out at camp this Fall with his fully original 1894 Winchester chambered in 38-55. That one has been in his family just about forever. His 6 digit ser # starts with 37###x I think. Yours should be close.

Terrible bluing for 1984, lazy Japanese!.

All kidding aside looks mostly original, If I thought any of it looked retouched it may be in the darker areas. Thanks for sharing, I would just rub with an oily cloth.

I would be wary of that one.

The finish of the metal looks to have been "wire brushed" It should be very smooth.

That isn't "pitting" from being carried. The "grain" of the wear is inconsistent with "handling" marks.

I would say "filed or brushed and reblue"

I would agree --- the hammer in particular looks to have quite a bit of pitting. The fact that the wood has been poorly redone (note the side profile around the tang), would give greater weight to bluing likely to have been worked on. It's certainly not an untouched rifle in its current state.

Few more pics

I paid $450 for it

Looking at trading

It's worth at least what you paid for it. You haven't lost anything. Shoot it, you might like it.

I don't appreciate lever action firearms, but that's just me, not a thing wrong with them and they mostly do what they were designed to do.

I recently purchased a "parts gun" Model 94 chambered for the 25-35. It's not as pretty as your rifle. Mine has no finish anywhere and the bore is a sewer pipe. I like it. Go figure.

It's going to have new stocks fitted because the originals are rotten and falling apart. Might even get a new barrel. I wonder if I will like it as much when it's all cleaned up?

There was a time when Model 94 rifles couldn't be given away to a starving poacher. Things have changed, they've become "nostalgic" again and south paws love them.

Your rifle will never be a "jewel" but it most certainly makes the grade as a "fun gun"

Still a good hunter. Grey gun, wood oversanded badly. If bore is decent still got life in it. When new it was special order gun, button magazine (half), shotgun butt. Barrel should be 26 inches to bolt face. Well worth what you paid.

I have a really good condition pre 64 model 94 so really don’t have much interest in this one.
Thought the price was good so I bought it
