Just picked up this rifle from a buddy who bought it new and never used it...can anyone tell me a bit about this 22....looks to be a winchester remake...not a browning remake....looking for base and mounts if still avail....looks to be made in the 1990s....it is a sporter...or if anyone has pics of the scopes they have mounted......Thanks

I am a avid collector and shooter of vintage and repr Win 52's, and I must say these Winchester reproduction sporters are one of the most accurrate, even competing with todays Cooper, Kimbers Etc.! They have match chambers, reall great barrel steel and awsome fit and finnish. The best group I got out of mine is 1 hole at 25 yards with CCI St VEL. I wish I had more money whhen I bought mine new in the early 1990's, but I was a struggling Apprentice cabinetmaker making $7.75 and hour, this when these guns were retailing for $750ish, almost a months wages at the time!
About bases if you can't find any Leopold 2 piece bases, you can mount a Winchester model 88 one piece weaver mount to the action backward and this worked out for couple years for me till I put a set of peep sights on it. Great gun, hope you have as much funn as I did, cheers Dale Z!

Rings and bases
If you want something classy for such a nice .22 buy some Talley's. Just be sure to get the right height for the scope your mounting. These rifles have a very high bolt throw, and I think the best scope ever made for them is the Leupold 3-9 EFR scopes. Low rings will just clear but mediums may be better. If you go with a big scope you will need high rings for sure. Here is one on GunsAmerica.

Blacktail is right you need atleast medium rings, and I did have the exact scope he recommended, looked and functioned perfectly! I forgot talley made bases for these, but then you need to use there rings, wich are far better than most, but if you just want to get it up an running with left over mount parts, used the suggestion I recomended, very cheap way to try it out.Dale Z!

The best part is if you have a Browning and Win model like me you can use the scope on both rifles, just need two sets of bases. The LOP on both rifles is the same, and it works great.

Thanks for the replies...I will look into both suggestions.....looking forward to trying it out....any idea how many were made...my numbers are WBSO 4O6 on the receiver.....this is one heavy duty looking sporter for a 22...crisp checkering...bolt action is very smooth ...nice walnut wood.....Thanks again

This was the first firearm I ever purchased (1993-94?) and it cost $640 + taxes at the time. My buddies thought I was crazy to spend that on a .22 rimfire. In retrospect I wish I could have afforded to buy 2
As mentioned before they are incredibly accurate, I have a few 50 yd. targets that I saved somewhere that have pretty much ragged hole groups printed on them. If I remember correctly they were shot with CCI Standard velocity.
Mine has digested dozens of "bricks" of ammunition and has cleaned out quite a few gopher fields. She's no longer mint and has a few bumps and bruises but she remains the most accurate .22 I own besting 2 Sako P94 Finnfires.
I may have a set of Talley bases kicking around somewhere( I ended up using Leupolds on it ) If I can find them i will PM you.

Bought my 52 new in late 90s for smallbore silhouette & installed an older Simmons 6.5 - 20 X Silhouette scope & scope/bolt clearance is DEFINATELY an issue. Good rig but will JUST make weight for a hunter class rifle.
Think I still have the Winchester catalogue from that year - could send you a copy of it if you'd like (as long as I can find it & the yard apes will help me scan it )
I've been lucky with it as it will usually shoot about 1 1/2" at 100M with CCI standard velocity - its cheaper than federal gold medal and works good in the gun. No idea how many bricks of it down the barrel but still works well. There is a one piece base made - have seen them either on midway usa or brownells websight. Will try to post pictures of it asap.

They are a nice gun ,first full sized 22 I bought it is the same dimension and weight as my Voere 308 norma magnum. Bought mine new Mar.29 1993 still have the bill yet,cost $734 tax included, put on Warne high !" rings and bases $73 the scope just clears the bolt handle,scope is a 6-18 trophy,bushnell,the serial is in the low 400 was one of the first ones to come to Edmonton,shoots very well,Winchester made in Japan.About 10 years ago saw one for sale at a gun show the guy couldn't get $550 took it to a few shows before it fianally sold these days you could sell the gun faster and priced higher.
If it's a keeper, you could always have the bolt handle re-worked...
