I have a Winchester model 54 that has great sentimental value and was wondering if there is a way to mount a scope without machining the bolt handle and changing the safety. Apparently this gun wasn't made to have a scope mounted and I'm not real interested in changing it much from its original form. The receiver seems to be tapped/drilled along the side of the bolt as well as on top but I think these are for different sight variations and not mounts. Thanks for any thoughts y'all may have.

It is possible to find a side mount for them. I believe Pachmyer(?) made a low-swing mount for them. It may have had one for which the holes correspond. Just a guess though without seeing it.

A lot of the 54s were drilled and tapped on the front receiver ring. It was done to take a mount made by Griffen & Howe. The front part of the mount fit into the dove tail for the rear site and the back part of the mount screwed into the holes in the front receiver ring. The system took a 4 power lyman scope with a 7/8 tube. Had the light gathering capabilities of a roll of toilet paper but they did work quite well for what they were. Try EBay or gunsamerica. Good luck. Rod

Have a custom mount made using the front receiver ring and the barrel to mount a long eye relief scope similar to a "scout rifle"...

They just were not meant for a modern scope...
