I was able to acquire a nice Winchester Model 68 single shot the other day. Anybody else have one?? What's good or bad about this model. It has a rather odd rear peep sight on it.:)

Hi kjohn
Congrats on the 68. I have one that unfortunately is missing that "odd rear sight" and I can"t seem to locate a replacement. In the interim I mounted a regular Winchester open sight - its a bit far out but you get used to it.( For that matter, so is the peep sight). I also have a couple of Mod. 67,s basicaly the same rifle with the time tested action- all are great plinkers and especially good for training new shooters -Cheers Ross

Thanks for the interest and reply. It is s shame that some of these grand old rifles are getting cut up.:(

I have one of these rifles in pretty good shape, and it is complete, including the "funny" peep sight. It has been in the family for quite some time, and my son now wants it, so he will be taking possession of it shortly. Very accurate rifle, has accounted for hundreds of grouse over the years. If you shoot some CB longs, you will find they are practically mute in that long 27" barrel. Enjoy your model 68! Regards, Eagleye.

model 68

I have had many model 67's and 68's over the years and all of them were great shooters with the long barrel. I don't think I ever paid over $50 for any of them. They really weren't the most expensive rifle built but still showed some old school quality. I drilled and tapped a older crusty one and gave it to a friend's son as a first rifle. The Weaver base that fits on the barrel of the Browning auto-22 was what I used and it straddles the action nicely while covering up the dovetail in the barrel on the 68's more rearward sight. Just a thought if you want to scope one. He shoots empty 22 casings off fenceposts at 25 yards with it - I wish I had those younger eyes. Safe shooting, Peter.
