Hey guys

I have a Winchester model 670 in 30-06. I like to use the action in a project 300win mag precision rifle. Are there any members on here or dealers who have experience truing or working with this type of action.
Also wondering if I am wasting time with this action or if it would be more feasible to go with a aftermarket custom action like the stiller tac 300 on the ee.

Thanks
Ben

you'd have to have to bolt face opened up and probably the feed rails altered as well. all said and done you'f be farther ahead to sell it as is and buy magnum 700 action and go from there.

why don't ya just shove some 208's in the 30-06 and go with it....300 win only had maybe 75 fps over the 06 and you don't have the belt...which does nothing anyways.

I like Model 70's and have target rifles built on three different M 70 actions. As I said, I like them. Nonetheless, I would use something else if I was intending to build a serious precision rifle. The Model 70 just takes too much work in order to have it work not quite as well.

Gotta to an shameless plug for the Chou Brothers in Ontario.... It all started when I admitted to them I'm a Winnie Model 70 lover since it was the very first NEW .308 rifle I bought just out of the Battalion (1VP) and a Forestry student ... I even carried it in the bush while Timber Cruising and doing Logging Block Layout for Weldwood Plywood in Williams Lake, BC.

I wanted to use a push feed .308 action for a PR build with a Benchmark barrel 6.5mm 8" twist and the Chou Brothers advised me to put my emotions/feelings/sentimental moments aside and go with a custom action.

Well I ignored them now (shows my ignorance and bull headedness) and had this combination build. Didn't that rig shoot into nickels or 3/4" group with boring regularity? It showed so much potential shooting 1/2" groups sometimes, but my bench technique sucked and still sucks. I sold it foolishy last March and now I'm rocking an Accuracy International AT .308 I just bought in Sep (last month) from Wolverine Supplies.

Moral of the story: I love Winnies, too. But for more serious work, I went with a purpose built PR receiver. I still have a soft spot for Winnie Model 70s, but I'm taking my Featherweight .308 hunting this November.

Hope this helps you decide which action to build your 300 Winnie on.... Best wishes!

Cheers,

Barney

I don't think it's a total waste of time and firmly believe I can build a 3/8 moa Model 70. With my best one, I have fired ten shot groups under 1 1/2 inches at 300m and the other two are close. It is just, as I said, more work.

Find me on facebook.... mystic precision inc

A customer just sent pics and info on his completed win 70 build. Seems to be shooting very well for him.

Shilen Select match barrel chambered in 6.5 CM, MDT chassis .. barreled action built and coated by BARC.

Not the most popular action choice but it is possible. The swap to a 300WM wouldn't be my thing... I quite like the 30-06.

And you could also make it a 280Rem or improved version. That would give you the ballistics of the 300WM without the recoil and without all the addn cost of modifying the action.

One thing that I think makes a real improvement to the post-64 Model 70 is to enlarge the receiver thread to 1 1/16. This eliminates the broached cut through the threads and prevents chamber distortion when the barrel is tightened on. This is especially so in magnum chambers. I also like to either bump or sleeve the bolt to eliminate the tendency for the rear of the bolt to be deflected by the sear. On my own, two are bumped and one is sleeved.
