Hello all,

My dad was going through his inventory of guns and found an unfired model 70 in .257 roberts. It still has the original box and has been in his safe since he traded for it in the '80s.

The google searches I've done to get a ball park figure show the pre '64 version is worth a pretty penny, 1000-1500 depending on condition and use. I can't find squat on the post '64.

Anyone know what kind of value it has and things to look at to determine dings and such? I will be looking it over this weekend for scratches and rust, but i'm hoping since it was in the box, it will be immaculate.

Thank you.

There are two things of note on your (Dad's) rifle.

It's a 257 Roberts essentially new in the box and there are a good few 257 Roberts fans who might like to have the rifle.

What it doesn't have going for it - being a 1980's (or there about's) it was built "after" Winchester essentially tossed in the towel and the employees tried to keep the plant running as the US Repeating Arms company - so in "some eyes" it's "not" a real Winchester and although I have no personal bias as to the quality or lack thereof, there are many that think they are "junk".

Back a few years ago I saw a "new in the box" 1980-something 257 Roberts Win 70 Featherweight sell for 700'ish bucks (which may give you a ball park).

If this was mine I don't know if I would be in any rush to sell it. It's a viable deer caliber, ammo is still available, it's probably got nicer wood on it than rifles costing 2K or greater today, and I doubt, being a post 64, that you get enough out of it to finance a plastic stocked rifle today that is of similar or lesser quality (despite the opinions on p-64 Winchesters)

Should have added. There is an "on-line" appraisal available for Winchesters (cost 9.95 US), maybe worth a look - here's the link http://www.homestead-service.com/cart/Online_Appraisals.htm

Thank you. I was figuring 750-1000 if i found the right person But not holding my breath. He says he only wants to get rid of it for a nice competition shotgun if at all. Despite a large collection, he loves each one as much as his kids.

No, not a chance of a price like that unless you find that guy. If you can walk away from a sale of a Post 64 M70 with $600 in your pocket you're doing well. The only Post 64 M70 I would own would be the 458 my PH carried in Zimbabwe, and only because it's go so many miles on it and stories behind it.

Hey, I hope he gets every penny. My Pre64 started life out as a 257 Roberts. Now it's a 257 Weatherby. Not my doing...put the pitchforks away!
