I'm reaching out here hoping you guys might be able to help me help a friend.

He's got a 1981 manufacture XTR Featherweight in .243. The gun itself is in decent condition. But it took a tumble some years ago in the mountains and now the stock is severely cracked. He tried to glue it back together but it didn't work out very well.

What i'm wondering is, are these 2 piece or 1 piece floorplate designs? And who would make a decent aftermarket stocks for one?

The rifle belonged to his father. So he doesn't mind spending some money to bring it back into working condition. But he's also a regular guy who doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg either.

Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think you will find that the original XTR used the two piece bottom metal - I understand that you can tell the difference by opening the floor plate - if there is a third, middle, action screw - that is a two piece bottom metal - if there is no third middle action screw, that is a one piece bottom metal - they do not necessarily interchange one stock to another - there were "spacers" sold to allow use of two piece bottom metal in stocks inletted for one piece metal. - as per AI on Google.

Personally, I'd go with a Boyd's for a wood stock.

And in a pinch you could go with a Ramline synthetic. Try to find one of the older ones when Ramlines came with a Pachmayr decelerator pad installed on them.

NAA.

Also, just lightly snug that third screw hiding in there.
I've seen multiple broken bottom metal assemblies caused by people tightening that screw way too tight.
