Helping a buddy to evaluate how much his rifle worth.

Its a Winchester Model 71 in 348 w.c.f. it has a 24 barrel serial number range 252XX and overall condition good for its age no cracks on the wood and bore appears to be bright with sharp rifling.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Not nearly enough info.
Checkering? Bolt peep sight?
Does it comes with original sling swivels? Sling?

Agreed. Basically, there's two models/grades that I'm aware of. A standard which is usually not checkered and a deluxe grade. In addition, there are a number extras that were available that enhance the value. My first was a standard grade and the minute I let it go, I regretted doing so. A while back, I lucked into the deluxe grade, in mint shape, shown below. As has been correctly mentioned, photos of the one in question would help the evaluation considerably.

Sorry for the late response was really busy last couple of days.

It appears to be a deluxe with checkering and sling swivels, it also have a stock front and rear sight but no peep sight.

It does not have a recoil pad but it has a metal recoil plate contoured to the shape of the buttstock so it appears original.

I will post some pics tonight hopefully I can tell him what to expect to get from it.

Here's a start that may be of help, a scan of the info you seek, from my copy of The Blue Book of Gun Values.

In Canada prices are MUCH lower than those. In my experience with Winchesters a 71 deluxe without bolt peep and original sling would bring between $800(poor) and $2000 with the highest price being excellent original finish on metal AND wood. My 2 cents.

Blue Book prices are for the US and are usually way higher than the market in Canada will bear...

True enough. I posted the Blue Book page as information for consideration as a starting point only. If I recall correctly, the few standard grade examples in very good shape I've seen the past few years, have been in the $1,300.oo price range and the odd deluxe, usually with a tag of around $2,500.oo.

This is the rifle in question sorry for the cell phone pics as the battery on my camera is charging and this is what I can show you guys for the time being.

That 71 will sell in a reasonable time period for around $1800-$2000. It will be gone in two seconds at $1500. It is not in exceptional shape but it also doesn't look to be in the kind of poor, altered condition that would make it much more undesirable. Better quality pics might change that assessment.

Bang on the money I'd say, looks to be decent but better pics would help. If the original swivels and sling are there that helps as well.

Here's a tip. Never use a white background when taking firearm pictures. Otherwise the gun just looks like a dark silhouette. All that white makes the program cut down the light, so the dark firearm is underexposed.

A dark background doesn't do that.

Have seen them on CGN exchange for $1500, listings run a long time.
Have seen them on gunshow tables for $1200, right up til closing.
15 years ago a local 'smith was buying them up ~$7-900 to convert to 450 Alaskans
