I have recently aquired a Win.Model 74 and have had very little luck in finding out much about it from the serial number I did find it was made in 1948.It is in good shape but needs a severe cleaning I am wondering what ammo it may prefer shorts/long or long rifle and is there any problems I should look for before shooting it.The bore looks good and free of any rust or pitting any help would be great thanks for your time .Night

Most guns shoot long rifle ammo as it is most manufactured, least expensive ammo today. the heavier bullet and larger powder amount tends to give better accuracy and a longer shooting range.
Cleaned good and clear barrel...take it to the range and try it. I am sure it will not explode in your hands. If in any doubt, take to a gunsmith for a once over.

I kinda thought that the model 74 came in shorts only version or a long rifle only version, I have one of each. FS
For more info on your rifle check out rimfire central.

He asked what ammo it may PREFER...so that told me that he had seen the stamping on the barrel showing the 3 lengths rather than only one. Though sometimes when we "assume"....well my booboo. the ammo is more costly if it is either short or long he requires ..IF it is available.

Thanks for all the replies sorry I have been so getting back on here but I have been away. The barrel is stamped 22L and that is all are the 22L hard to come by I do not have alot of experiance with rim fire guns. Thanks agian for all the help Regards Night

With the bolt removed, drop a 22 LR in the chamber and see
it goes in all the way with out having to push it in.
If there is carbon in the camber, you may have to push it
lightly, I don't know if you can even buy 22 longs any more.
It should be 22 long rifle I would think, these are not that old
of a gun.
