Hi All,

Hoping the fine minds on CGN can help shed some light on this find, as I am not knowledgeable on rifle values.

An elderly man passed away, and a rifle which no-one knew he owned was found. As I'm the only close friend that has a PAL, it was given to me as the family has no interest whatsoever in keeping it. I've said I'd do my best to get this appraised and let them know so they can decide with all the info to hand.

It's a Winchester Model 92 in 25-20 WCF. From what I've been able to gather from the serial number online, the rifle was either made in 1927 or 1929 (both dates have come up). The rifle has no obvious damage or pitting/rust that I can see, though near the muzzle on the underside of the barrel there is some white residue - this may just be from the years of storage or could be something more ingrained... I haven't cleaned the gun or done anything besides a quick function check (it works).

Knowing the previous owner, he was an avid backpacker/outdoorsman and my theory is he used this as a bear defense gun perhaps - it would be small enough to conceal in his large backpack he carried. There are signs it was carried, but it has obviously been well cared for if it is as old as suspected.

I've posted some initial pictures below - sorry they're terrible I"m not a photographer. Happy to post more of specific parts if that helps. For those that can't make it out, the serial number is 990720.

Thank you all for your time in advance

If you are in the mainland the last time I was in international shooting supplies they had ammo on the shelf. A bit of time with some g96 on the metal and that girl should come up nice. 92’s are a beautiful cycling gun and the 25-20 has next to no recoil. They are fun girls to shoot.

In the Winchester "collector jargon" that is a "saddle ring carbine model. The 92's were made in a "rifle configuration as well. An individual collector will have his own preference so "offers" from one person might not reflect what another might offer.

Looky is probably right in his assessment but from the photo's provided it looks like the front site may have been buggered with (or it might just be camera angle that the front site looks quite a bit further back than was factory original), If it is an "original from factory" specimen I would agree easily a grand (photo quality prevents us from accurately assessing I think) but if it has been "modified" , even tho it might have been done years ago and very professionally done , a true value might be down in the 6-700 range...

Thank you everyone for your info so far. I’m away this weekend, however next week I’m going to clean it and take some better pictures which may help more- especially with the question of the front sight.

Unfortunately I haven’t had any luck figuring out the history of the firearm- no one actually knew this gentleman owned it so family and friends can’t help.

I am not a collector so take this for what ever you want

Unless you are going to shoot it ..I would not even clean it.. leave it as is

If you are going to shoot it just clean the inside if the barrel and lube it with some gun oil ... none of the new stuff BTW you do not know what the new stuff will do to the patina on the out side of the gun

the Patina is what a collector will pay for

Looks very Nice :)
