Winchester model 94 function problem, I need help

Hey everyone,

I've recently purchased a post 64 Winchester from another cgn'er and it's having serious feeding problems. I'm more familiar with the garand series of rifles but "the miss gets what the miss wants". What's happening it as I load 7+1 rounds it'll extract the round perfectly and ready a cartridge on the feed ramp but as I slide the action foreword the round gets stuck in a diagonal position and jams, 9/10 times if I pull the action back a 1/4 inch the round jumps horizontal and loads just fine. I need some help determining what's wrong, maybe the feed ramp is bent (is it supposed to be perfectly straight?). If anyone has one could I ask you to quick check for me?

Any input would be much appreciated, it's quite an attractive gun and the miss is already attached to it so I'd rather not send it back if it's a quick fix.

The model 94 carbine is supposed to hold seven rounds INCLUDING one in the chamber. Does it misbehave with six in the mag and one in the chamber?

Work the action briskly and in a vertical position.

A 94 should work in any position, at any speed, with the possible exception of dead slow upside down. Yes, your feed ramp should be perfectly straight, if it's not, you are probably the proud owner of one of the stamped parts versions of the '94. Made from 1964 to approximately 1971 they are considered to be the worst quality of the '94 series Winchester produced. That said, they can be fixed, and shoot just fine.
Most of the issues I've heard of with '94's deal with this era.
The feed ramp on these cheaper versions is of stamped steel, all other versions it is thick machined steel that would likely break before bending.

I have that problem with hornady 170gr bullets (mines a 20's vintage). What ammo you feeding it, maybe try something else?

You could have a loose cartridge guide or possibly both or missing one. Find a schematic and have a good look at the parts and relation of them to one another. If it is one of the series Jonny Cannuck mentioned a complete disassembly and a clean polish deburr may be in order. I would replace the stamped carrier regardless, if it has one. You would not believe how a steel burr can play havoc on a brass case.
