Winchester Model 94

Gently drive them out of the dovetail with a brass punch (you can use a steel punch but you have to be extra carefull) and a hammer.

All of the 94's I've worked on have dovetailed rear sights and it should be immediatley visible. Newer models have a front sight dovetailed into a base that is screwed onto the barrel

I have been using this exploded view note part #5 sight elevator, my rifle does not have this, should it? and do I need it?

Schematic is from NRA publications.

The sight elevator allows you to adjust your sight for elevation by sliding it forward or backwards. Over the years Winchester used a variety of rear sights and they had slightly different elevators so if you are looking for a replacement make sure you get the right one. If you have any metal working skills it is an easy part to fabricate - I have made a few in the past.

Elevator

Does it need it?

It might, and it might not.

I have owned half a dozen 94's and most of them were set with the elevator at the first notch. I have owned a couple that didn't have the elevator and shot perfectly without it.

Shoot the gun and see where the bullets hit the target. If they are shooting low you will need to move the rear sight up therefore you will need an elevator.

What about the base of the front sight?(under part #2) Is it screwed to the barrel?

It is not on my particular rifle, seems to be a part of the barrel? The front sight itself came off rather easily, The rear however does not seem to want to move at all, guess I'll have to get a larger piece of brass..

lots of good info, thanks everyone.

The rear sight was a major PITA to remove. All the small pieces are in the tumbler for a few hours that should take care of the rust..
